I just went to my Aunts to pick up my Grandfathers coin collection that she wants to sell. I have to unload most of the silver coins and proof and mint sets becasue I cannot afford to buy it all. I am cherry picking some good stuff though. My issue is this. The was a pill container full of little gold nuggets. I have never really seen them and have absoultelu no idea how much there is. It feels about the same as a roll of nickels. My wustion is should I just take it to my coin dealer? I certainly can't take it to a we buy gold, I would not trust them. Any other ideas?

Take it to a few places and accept the highest offer. Make sure you tell them what you're doing, heck, I'd bring a list of where I was going and show it to them. LOL Let the bidding wars begin!

Oh...make sure you get a weight on them. You could also phone shop and get quotes once you know the weight. :)

As a very rough rule of thumb, natural gold nuggets without any rock inclusions are worth twice the price of pure spot gold.
If you want to find their real value, take them to a gem and mineral show.
The biggest gem and mineral show extends over many days, and is in Tucson, AZ, but there are many other gem and mineral shows across the U.S. throughout the year.

the weight of a roll of nickels? That sounds like thousands of dollars worth...maybe even over 10K!

I had no idea that they could be worth a premium to spot. Imagine gold that is more valuable than gold. Thanks guys. I never dealt with this before and I want to get her as much as I can. I will get the weight and then make some calls. I hope its a home run. She is going to do relaly well on this whole deal.

Wish you had enough posts to sell here. Would love to see what silver you're going to unload.

Me too ayejay1974. I have alot of stuff to sell for her. Mostly just silver coins but alot. Tons of proofs and mint sets. 900 quarters just to start. No key dates anywhere. Someone must have gotten in there and snagged them up.

I wouldn't think all your gold nuggets are worth twice spot price. Depending on where they originated, they would typically be approx 20 to 22 karat. Small pickers/dust/flakes usually run for spot on ebay, of course the shipping... well, that's another story. However, nicely formed(buyers' taste) larger nuggets, say, over a gram, often go for a premium above spot, but from what I've seen 2x spot is a little much. If you have some monster nuggets though, the bigger the better(several grams+), then you could see some big bids. If you can find an out of the way, or unbusy post office, ask to weigh them. Put a piece of paper on the scale and then have the postal person zero the scale and get a weight on all... then on some of the bigger ones. Then post some pictures. And one more thing... If you're not really too familiar with this type of thing, have a jeweller, or someone who does know, test some random smaller pieces. It would be best to have some sort of verification before selling if unsure. And, remember... pictures!

oblakavshtanax... I'm sure I can dig up a pill bottle of pyrite for you! And... I guess I may be confused at times between the words/phrases, "what something is worth" and "what you can get for it". My comments in my above post would refer to an informed buyer. ebay has many uninformed buyers... some surely unfamiliar with the difference between a grain and a gram. Well, I 'spose they still get a piece of gold for 10 or 15 bucks... even though it's only worth, maybe 3... oooppps! There's that word again.

I found a coin dealer and just went today. I had several gold nuggets and they were called 24K she scratched each one on a stone, put a drop of chemical on the scratch mark on the stone, and declared it all to be pure gold. I did get more for it, but I also got a different price on all the different K's I had. then she checked the market, it was headed up, so she waited until we were finished, then went back and checked and it went up another 27 cents an OZ.! So, I suggest you find a rare coin dealer, with a good reputation in your area. google and see, and then look for reviews. worked for me. I Know nothing, but I did what the good folks on here told me to do and it was great advice. I ended up extremely happy.

I am going to go to my coin dealer today. He is very nice, gives good advise, and so far has been honest. I put the gold, the pieces for the most part are the size of tooth fillings, some small guys, into a plastic half dollar tube. It is filled to the top. I am very interested to find out.
