I sold off most of my slq duplicates and all but 1 of my dateless 16s, and decided to put the profits towards my largest coin purchase yet. I wanted to get something cool to put away for my still newborn son, since he was born last year. My wife mentioned starting a college fund, and as most of you know about me; I'd rather put some hard assets away until he is older and use them as an incentive to go to college(even if he just sells them for tuition). Anyways, that is the plan right now.

Real nice. But I'd like to see it a little closer so if you could sent those to me for a closer inspection, I'd really like that better.

I will get some better pics up soon. I think it was vermontensium that actually gave me the idea to buy a 2010 set of some sort for my newborn in a different thread. I dont think either of us thought I'd take it this far. :-) This is probably the last time in a while I will have had the funds to make a purchase like this. Thank you SLQ lots!

such a thoughtful gift but I can't help but wonder... is this really the best time to buy gold? Isn't the golden rule to buy low and sell high? I have two of those from 1986 and I'm about to sell, and put it in my roth account.

And yeah, it's always a risk buying gold, but it's also a risk holding a depreciating currency or investing in the stock market. I've been buying gold since it was $700 an ounce(got in a bit late), and will probably continue buying it as long as I can financially(which might not be much longer). I'm sure it will sustain some massive drops over the years, but I think it is safer than cash in the long run..

Quote: I've been buying gold since it was $700 an ounce(got in a bit late)... You must have started into gold about the same time I did. I had about 30ozs in gold coins a year and a half ago and am now down to 8ozs but do have 300ozs of silver now. These gold proof sets are a good buy at $2800-$2900 and I would have picked one up if finances permitted. It's a very nice gift to put away for your son. A college fund is a great idea too but likely not as flashy!

Thanks. 30 oz...WOW! That's a lot! I'm at 15, mostly pre-33. I got back into coins in 2007, and it was actually the gold that had me interested again. Yeah, I was fortunate to find some great Standing Liberty quarter lots on ebay last year, and actually made around 5K in profits after reselling them. That was a once in a lifetime run of good luck and calculated risks, as it is usually quite difficult to make money buying and selling on the bay. Here is a better picture, and I put my wife's PAMP Suisse Pendant in the photo too. I love the way gold proof looks next to each other.
