The 1887 is likely MS64, a nice Morgan. See the line extending down and left, just at the junction of the neck and chin? And the curved line between the wreath and the eagle's left wing, most visible in the last 1887 pic? And the line extending downward from the "n" in "In?"

That's clashing - the dies came together without a planchet between them, and some details from each die were transferred to the other. The next coins struck had those additional details. Not really a value-added feature, but found often on Morgan dollars and pretty neat.

Now I see them, I'm getting a better picture of what a common 1887 Morgan looks like, so these I want to stay away from yes?

The clashing is one of the noted things we often look for in vamming, among other things listed in the 101 guide...Since you have the coin in hand, Check out the Vamworld site for 1887P VAM 12 and see with a magnifying Glass can pin point the VAM.number..oh when you get on site..just look on the left and click on Morgan vams and then choose your year and mint mark....happy researching...

I like the date position for 12A, but the *only* place on the whole coin where lighting obscures detail is the precise place we're looking for the "Alligator Eye."

"RIB" seems doubled at top left on example coins; I don't see that with this one and it should be visible even in these small pics, because they're so nicely focused.

I agree, Since the pictures possibly due to the lighting will not allow the double eye or liberty, I have been examining secondary diagnostics...The Clash into the N in god we trust is one such noting, as many have rotations, also the Nose clash just left of the olive branch is defined.....his pictures also shows a slight die crack from the you in united to the star...from the lighting I can't exactly confirm it, but all other clashes for 87, don't have all 3 of these secondary points of interest,, but he can look as he has it in hand...

From what I remember first attempting to describe in words I'm now seeing in the VAM 12A pictures. I finally feel like I'm moving forward in my education of the Morgan silver dollar. My fascination is in the BEAUTY & CRAFTSMANSHIP put into such a fine peice of AMERICAN HISTORY. I now am starting to get a better understanding of the History behind the Morgan, that makes all the difference in the world. Now I can't stop reading & learning, I sleep 5 hrs. make coffee sit & read till I go to bed, Thank you for what you are doing. Totally ADDICTED

You've figured me out, rlcbj59. Morgans fascinate me. The design is complex, detailed, beautiful; easily the finest 19th-Century Mint design. Strong arguments can be made for SLQ's, St Gaudens Double Eagles and Walking Liberty halves to be the most beautiful US coin design of all time, but there's something about these huge, heavy Morgan cartwheels which draws me with a gravitational pull.

But understand, you are taking a large bite indeed. There is a whole lot to learn; you're probably going to reach a point where you choose to specialize in one sense or another because you've figured out that one person simply can't assimilate it all. That's OK. Just follow your heart with it.

Thanks Dave your right, I'm not familiar with the term SLQ, but I have 100 St. Gaudens. I love coins. I'd be willing to sell all the St. Gaudens to invest in Morgans, any Ideas? Names Lee
