1863 Indian Head Cent J-302 - Coin Community Forum

mal1980 New Member United States 11 Posts	Posted 01/11/2011 12:06 am I recently acquired a indian and Flying Eagle cent collection. In it there is an 1863 Indian cent which appears to be made of a different material then the rest of the coins. After researching the coin I am curious as to whether it could be a rare Judd 302, it is thicker and looks like it is made of Bronze? What is the sure method of determining if it is a J-302? robbudo Pillar of the Community United States 2760 Posts	Posted 01/11/2011 07:47 am The J-302 will be easy to tell from a picture. There have an L where the 1864-1909's have them. It shouldn't be thicker than the other copper-nickel Indian's (minted from 1859 to 1863), though. The 1863's are much thicker than the later date indian's (some of the 1864 through 1909). I have a J-300, which is thinner than the other 1863's because it is made of bronze instead of copper-nickel. Lastly, there were some patterns with a reeded edge - and you can easily look for that on your coin. All that said, a picture will be worth a thousand words. Furthermore, if you can get a weight on the coin (any jeweler or coin shop for that matter will have an accurate scale), that would be beneficial too. Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum!
