That's an exceptional Imperial Mexican Peso, Bacchus... and what tragedies the Hapsburg family has gone through.

Maximilian being the younger brother of Franz Joseph died in front of the firing squad after a three year reign in 1867. His wife, the Belgian princess Charlotte had shown signs of paranoia before and became insane. She returned to Europe and survived till 1927.

Rudolph, the son of Franz Joseph committed suicide in 1889. His wife Elisabeth (Sissi) was murdered near Geneva in 1898. Ultimately his nephew Franz Ferdinand became crown prince and was murdered in 1914. It triggered the start of WW-I, though Franz Joseph did not approve the escalation leading to the declaration of war.

Thanks - yes Franz Joseph had a lot of tragedy occur around him - Fascinating to think that in the photo right at the start of the thread all that was still in front of him. What a pity photography wasn't around even earlier - just think of the photo's that could have been!

From what I gather Maximilian I seems to have tried to do reasonably well by the people he governed in Mexico, within the framework of the time at least. I hadn't read up on his wife and didn't realize she lived on till 1927. In the grand scheme of things - that's not that long ago at all.

This project is coming to a close. I really only have two spaces to fill - of rulers who could have attended but didn't. Frederick VII of Denmark could have attended in the role of duke of Holstein and Lauenburg though it's not unsurprising that he did not.

I'm really pleased with this example I managed to acquire.

Do you happen to know what the metrology of "9 1/4 ST = 1 MFS" is? It doesn't look like the usual "Cologne Mark" or similar German metrology.

Yes, poor old Emperor Maximilian. But really, what were they thinking trying to install a European Emperor in Mexico? The United States took a dim view of the attempt to recolonize the Americas. As I recollect the history, his empire was collapsing around him and he refused to leave when he had the chance.

Hi - it seems to be a reference to 9 1/4 rigsdaler species equalled one Cologne mark
