Another space filled ....... ... only 4 blanks to fill with at least something, though two could be improved and there is one coin I'd really like to upgrade at some stage.

My-Frankfurt-On-The-Main-1863-Project

Georg Victor
1859 1 Thaler
Ob. GEORG VICTOR FURST ZU WALDECK U. PYRMONT
Rev. EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN
Edge: MUNZVERTRAG VOM JANUAR 1857
Silver 0.9000
18.520g
mintage:
Mint: Berlin

George Victor was born on January 14th 1831 and ruled Waldeck and Pyrmont from May 1845 until his death (of pneumonia) on May 12th 1893. He was born in Arolsen in Waldeck and Pyrmont and died in Marienbad in Bohemia aged only 62. As he was only 14 when his father died his mother acted as guardian.

The family of Waldeck was enrolled by the Congress of Vienna among the sovereign houses of Europe on account of the distinguished services rendered by field-marshal Prince Georg of Waldeck in the wars against France.

Georg Victor had a civil list of 245,000 thalers (£36,735) which was considerably more than half the entire revenue of the principality.

The charter for the principality was granted in 1852. It provided for a legislative assembly of 41 members of which 18 were chosen by the nobility, 13 by the inhabitants of the towns and 10 by those in rural areas. The chamber met at irregular intervals and left the exercise of its power to a committee of only 6 members, 2 from the nobility, two from the towns and 1 from the rural districts.

A considerable amount of the revenue gained came from the sale of mineral waters and the amount of profits from gaming tables at Pyrmont. Previous to the French revolution the reigning prince kept a body of troops available of some 2,000 to 3,000. During the American war of independence 1,225 of these troops were sold to the British Government at a fixed sum per head. Three quarters never returned.

Just a reminder of the link and the project ...

Hi, Thanks - I get a lot from Ma-Shops and a few from ebay Germany - (from relaible sellers I might add) There are some fakes out there so it pays to be careful. I've also got some from the big European auction houses that can be found listed on Sixbid (http://www.sixbid.com/).

Hi,

From what I know all the dealers there subscribe to high standards and ethics (a bit like Vcoins). Personally I have bought from Loebbers, Ritter, Dr, Beusso Peus, Gorney & Mosch, Helios Numisnatik, Kunker, Mueller and likely others that I can't remember. I'd say that bargins were few, and the prices tend to the upper side of th emarket, but if it's a particular coin you are after and there happens to have been one sitting in an inventory for ages it can probably be got a a good price.

Another coin to add

There is really no suitable Lubeck thaler of this era.
I could have went with an older 48 schillings (thaler sized) but I though the 3 mark would be more appropriate given that is how I'll be representing some of the other free city states.

This is a relitively low mintage coin.

http://www.diadumenian.com/Congress...princes.html

A representative coin for each of the rulers or dignitaries in the photo.

Quite a long and rather expensive project but I found it a fantastic experience.

Now I have to fill in the spaces for the guys who weren't there ... :)
