Thanks.
It was great fun to do and I'd never tackled a discrete project like this before, with a definite end goal. Most of my collecting is open ended. I've never tried to do a date run or type set or anything like that - that type of collecting still doesn't interest me - but this one was really involving.

Nice project, congrats!
Though, I would keep my eyes out for medals with the guys not featured on their principalities' coins ...

I couldn;t resist this one. While it's been well circulated it's still quite a nice coin I think - and quite scarce. It's relevant to this thread as Otho was chosed to be king of Greece from among the German nobility - the son of Ludwig I, a Bavarian king. 1833 5 Drachma mintage 378,000 22.38g (mine 22.21) 0.9000 OTHON BASILEYS THS EALLDTHS Reeded edge

A new contempory thaler arrived today. Ferdinand would have received an invitation to the congress but he did not attend. He actually died a few years afterwards so perhaps he was ill at the time. He did not send a deputy either though. I have also included a picture of him as the similarity between this one and the coin bust is remarkable. Ferdinand 1862 1 Thaler Ob. FERDINAND SOUV. LANDGRAF Z. HESSEN Rev. EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Edge: MUNZVERTRAG VOM 24 JANUAR 1857 Silver 0.9000 18.520g mintage: > 6,592 It's also quite a low mintage coin. Interestingly Ferdinand was a titled a landgrave rather than a duke or a prince or an elector, my first coin bearing that title.

Another thaler picked up today. Quite a common one from Prussia from 1829 - Frederick III The colour is slightly redder than it should be (my poor photography) but it's quite a nice coin.

Awesome coins. I truly enjoy this thread and have looked through it more than 20 times admiring the coins. I myself have few coins mentioned here as we'll as about 20 other Thalers.
My goal is to collect Thalers from as many as different states, free cities etc.. So far I have thalers from Prussia, Bavaria, saxony, Hanover , Hessen, Wurterrumburg, Braunschweig, augusburg , Anahalt and Frankfurt. They are quite expensive and I have now come to end of funds for some time.

I'm trying to stay on focused - only strayed a couple of times :)
That's a neat start to a collection you have too. But you're right, they are pricy. Not really many snap decisions involved here - more careful selection. Believe it or not - most of these were funded by my selling "junk" from the attic. I really worked hard for these - so I appreciate them more.

Another addition. Ernst of Saxe-Altenberg It's not clear why he didn't make the Congress though it may be that he was aware of Prussia's stance and didn't want to alienate his very small state. Ernst I 1869 1 Thaler Ob. ERNST HERZOG VON SACHSEN ALTENBURG Rev. EIN VERINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Edge: GOTT SEGNE SACHSEN Silver 0.9000 Weight: 18.52g, 33mm mintage: 50,000 Ernst I was born on September 16th 1826 and ruled Saxe-Altenburg from August 3rd 1853 until his death. The family were formally called Sachsen Hildburghausen and it's orgin is from 1482 when the separation of the Ernestine and Albertine parts of the Saxony line took place. Up until 1826 Saxe-Altenburg formed part of Saxe-Gotha when there was an exchange of territories among the Saxon princes. The duke had a civil list of 143,000 thalers accounting for about one sixth of the revenue of the whole country (of about 509 square miles).

And another one. Alexander Carl 1859 1 Thaler Ob. ALEXANDER CARL HERZOG ZU ANHALT Rev. EIN VERINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Edge: GOTT SENGE ANHALT Silver 0.9000 Weight: 18.52g, 33mm mintage: 50,000 Mint: Berlin At the time of the Frankfurt meeting Alexander Carl had just died. He was the last of his line and the duchy was subsumed into a greater Anhalt and ruled over by Leopold IV of Anhalt-Dessau. He died just before the Congress so it is quite likely he would have actually received the invitation to attend. There is a much more commonly seen thaler design of Alexander Carl's depicting the bear on the castle wall design rather than the portrait coin. Total mintages for those years are around 70,000. While the mintage for the portrait coin is 24,000 they are seen a lot less than you might expect - so there may be some other factor involved.

Another addition of Heinrich LXVII who is in my "did not attend" section - though he sent his son instead. Heinrich LXVII 1858 1 Thaler Ob. HEINRICH LXVII V.G.G.REG. FURST REUSS I.L. Rev. EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Edge: MUNZVERTAG VOM 24 JANUAR 1857 Silver 0.9000 18.520g mintage: 10,000 Mint: Berlin MM:

Another Reuss coin added - this time from the senior line. Heinrich XX 1858 1 Thaler Ob. HEINRICH XX V.G.G.AELT. L. SOUV. FURST REUSS Rev. EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Edge: OMNIA CUM DEO Silver 0.9000 18.520g mintage: 9.500 Mint: Berlin Heinrich XX kept the principality administration based on absolutist principles at least until 1848 when because of the Revolution, was forced to issue a constitution but never came into force. The Prince, however, distinguished himself in military service in favor of the Austrian Empire.

Hello Bacchus2, do you know where your "Adolph 1864 1 Thaler " minted? (at your page 7).
I am doing some researches for my coins and I have a Adolph 1860 1 Thaler but I can't find any information about the mint of this coin. I suppose your 1864 and my coins were minted at the same place so I ask whether you know about that. Thank you if you can help. Henry

My coin was minted at Weisbaden. I know that many of Nassau's coins were. Hope that helps.
