Is My '39 Proof Jefferson A 38 Or 40 Reverse?

still lookin Pillar of the Community 967 Posts	Posted 02/09/2011 7:35 pm I can not tell by the photo, but if there is a vertical bar just at the ends of the actual steps, then it is a reverse of 1940. If the steps just end, then it is a reverse of 1938. The reverse of 1940 should have nice straight steps, the 1938 will be wavy. This is my understanding and I hope this helps. Bullnuke Valued Member United States 184 Posts	Posted 02/09/2011 7:49 pm Going out on a limb here as I am not the expert but I would say 40 reverse based on no big wave under the third pillar and I think I see the vertical bar at the end of the steps. Indian1 Pillar of the Community United States 3640 Posts	Posted 02/09/2011 9:06 pm Variety #1 (rev. of 38) or wavy steps as well as var. #2 (rev. of 40( / sharp even steps are both normal and not rare for the year. The rarity is the proof with the 1940 rev. (Well defined steps, not wavy) Cannot tell by the pic. but if the steps are sharp and well defined and even then you have it. Report this Post to the Staff

I see some telltale waviness under the third pillar, no defined vertical lines at the end of the steps I see a few nicks and rubs too on the proof. This is making it perhaps questionable. If this were the reverse of 1940 you would not be asking this question, it would be very obvious to you. So my vote goes to TY 1 Rev ... that of 1938 with the wavy steps. This is the proof coin and I'm afraid I'm not seeing the sharp definition of the steps that a 40 would exhibit. I have it sandwiched in my Dansco between a 38 and a 40 and I'm leaning toward the 38. Sometimes chicken - sometimes steak. But a 39 proof ain't Potted Meat and no crackers. Report this Post to the Staff
