Here is a tough Mercury dime Variety. The 1942-D/D only has a few graded to date at PCGS. This one is raw and probably grades AU.

Nice find! I've always been a fan of the merc's, but haven't really got into them that much...

Iowaguy, There are a lot of Mercury dime Varieties. I even made a 1939 DDO discovery!

AR, not in tune with the Mercury series but I see an S under that D.. look inside the D at the distance between the horizontal marks.

Jamez, It is confirmed as the FS-501 1942-D/D by myself and two additional experts. The line could be a die gouge or something else. There are a number of people who suggested to me the D/S. It sure looks like it doesn't it.

must be the photo then, I still see an S under that D. even doing an overlay with photoshop an S matches up with the crossbar inside the D. or perhaps the shadow inside the D and it looks like it has the bulb at the end of the lower loop in the S? The arc of the under MM from 3:00 to 6:00 doesn't line up with the D MM. has more of a curve to it. optical illusions?

From the photo, I am in agreement with Jamez as well. D over S.

D/S was my first reaction--but I'm no expert on US coins
