I just watched Cowboys and Aliens. Good movie.

Spoilers: The whole movie is about gold. The aliens actually have come to earth to steal our gold! In one flashback, the main character has just stolen a load of Liberty Half Eagles when they "beam it up" along with him and his girlfriend. Later on, he finds a buried mining ship that the aliens are using to refine gold.

British comedy about gold bullion starring Stanley Holloway: 'The Lavender Hill Mob' One of the funniest movies I have seen.

Some gold bars were stolen, which were cast into small models of the Eiffel Tower and lead plated, to be disguised as paper weights. The plot revolves around what happens to these 'paper weights'.

Not the primary focus, but the 28 July episode of Futurama involved the counterfeiting of continental currency by one of Professor Farnsworths's ancestors.

Kojak back in the 70s had an episode centering around the theft of rare coins. Opens with the thief ripping of an ancient Greek or Roman coin, as I recall.

Although I didn't see it, I remember the Hawaii Five-O episode about the 1913 nickel. Numismatic News had an article about it. Mid-1970s.

Age has not wearied my memory; I remember both the Kojak and the Hawaii Five-0 episodes. Aussie TV has never been that much different from the American, just has a bit of British and a good dollop of Australian input as well.

The horror/thriller movie I guess thats what you can call it, has a nice scence of a man drilling into a wall and finding lots of older coins. I see a few buffalos, morgans, and a Mercury dime.

Here's a link of the scence. The scence is from 0:32 to 0:50

Now this post has me starting to think I'll really watch more carefully on programs to see if they make coin mistakes

I got one. in Hoosiers (I think), a guy drops a quarter on the counter and you distinctly hear that it is clad, but the movie is set in the 50's.

There is an episode of The Unit (2006-2009), a U.S. TV series about an elite group of army anti-terrorist paratroopers, called 'Two Coins' - one a Roman coin, the other a silver dollar. Pretty interesting, has a couple good lessons...

I just rented X-Men: First Class, and a coin is central to its plot. The movie starts out during WWII, and the first scene centers around a 2 Reichsmark silver coin. This coin is shown several times, and is used again in a shocking scene at the end. Sometimes the coin isn't real, but done with computer graphics, and it's done well. There's also a huge Nazi gold bar in one scene, with an explanation about how it was made.

"A Simple Twist Of Fate" starring Steve Martin has numerous coin references in it and his gold coin collecting is a major part of the final plot twist.

I just re-watched it recently and there are refeerences to early internet coin shopping and saving on taxes by buying from out-of-state and several other things that are just as relavent to today's numismatist.

His neighbor/friend/dealer tries to get him interested in buying Walkers but he is only interested in gold coins.

He does like to take his coins out and play with them and bath in them - obviously no-no's. But most of the references are interesting anyway. I'd call it the most prominent coin collector movie I've ever seen or recall.

Wonder how many TV programs use modern coins in a program that was supposed to be a long time ago. Mat Dillin is always in a bar so might be some there.

It happens. I don't remember if it was on Bonanza or Gunsmoke, but they had a scene with a poker game and they showed a closeup of the pot and they were using Saint-Gaudens double eagles. (Both of these programs are set in the 1870's or so.) I often saw coins on Bonanza and they were usually Seated Liberty coins.
