Hello all. Quick question. A friend of mine who works at a bank brought home a $500 bill they had turned in and he called me to find out what it is worth. I don't do much with paper money but I do know that condition is very key. He says it has several creases and the mark on it from when the teller took it in to check the paper. I told him he should at least make a $100 on it. So was I right? high? low?

these were supposed to be retired starting in 1969! It amazes me that one will still turn up-for a really worn example, a dealer might pay 600-for a better grade, obviously much more. I pulled one out of a local bank in the 1990's. No tears or holes, just a little dark and worn, but I'm keeping it.

I think its worth more than $600. When he shows it to you, please post a picture. What a find though!

I can deal with the creases but that Effing pen, man do I hate that thing. Does nothing but damage. Anyone with an inkjet printer and some bleach can turn a dollar into a hundred and fool that thing...

Oh, forgot to mention my thoughts on the price.... $500 - $1200. Could be more if it's a star note or has errors, etc but a common bill with a bad pen mark, closer to $500.

600 is realistic for a common one in nice shape.

When I was a teller I used to have new tellers use those counterfit detector pens on bills from the 1950's and then come up to me telling me they found counterfits, I was always furious because instead of finding a counterfit all they had done was ruin a potentially collectable piece of currency.

Those pens are easy to fool.
Just soak your counterfeit bills in some water and corn starch. Let them dry and wipe of any powder. The pens work fine after that.
