will be submitting some GSA Morgans, and want to include some coins graded by third-rate agencies. Should I crack open these slabs and present in raw format? My first thought when seeing an NAC-66 on something is -----oh brother! and that will be the first negative thought in the mind of the grader. What's the consensus?

The GSA Morgans should be left in the black slabs because NGC will grade them and place a sealed band around the case for certification, every other grading service will crack them out which destroys most of the provenance. Do not send the original box and other material as it will not be returned.

If you have some coins in alphabet slabs, I think it would be best to submit them as raw coins so crack away. Make sure you thoroughly examine them for rim dings or signs of cleaning before submitting. You can find some nice coins in basement slabs but there is also a fair number of problems coins in those holders too.

I'd crack them out. Not like doing so will hurt their value.

The GSA coins should be left in the GSA holders and only submitted if they are Choice Mint State pieces (MS63 or better).

The NAC (basement slabber) slabs should be double checked to see if they're worth submitting as well. If you could post some pics we can be of more help. Best of luck!

I agree with everything everyone said and that includes you on that "first negative thought in the mind of the grader" when he or she sees that second-tier grade. I'll only stress what was said on the GSA Morgans, don't crack them out. You picked a good TPG for those, as it'll grade them right in those slabs. PCGS would crack them out.

The grader would not see the second tier slab. They would be cracked out and put into flips at submission before they were sent on to the graders.
