Hey I was doing some coin roll hunting and came across a extra spine on a 1964 penny. I'm not sure what it is but seems I have luck finding coins with extra spines. Is this a common coin?

I have one similar but not the same as yours. I have two full BU rolls of these:

That's a neat coin. This site is showing me a lot of interesting varites, looks like I'll be searching through my penny hoard again (my wife will be thrilled).

I don't bother rolling my pennies anymore. There's always something else to look for.

Hi, to me it looks like a die chip after once a die clash. The second 1964 extra bud looks similar to the 1965 extra bud do to hub doubling. Try a look at Ken Potter ***Please do not post e-mail addresses in threads***Avoids spamming*** If I look hard enough I have an extra stem variety some place.

To answer your original question, it is not overly common. The location of the 'spine' can vary slightly as well. Mint state examples usually sell at a decent price, I paid a heavy premium for one in MS-65, but then I am a variety guy and supply/demand prices usually go out the window when I see something I want! The only TPG firm that recognizes and comments on this variety is CCCS.
