I am having a problem determining the variety of this coin. The Charlton book shows a narrow date which I think this is but the picture in Charlton doesn't show the hoof going under the part of the date that this coin does.

Any opinions please

If you check out this thread here on a 43 you'll see that a lot of variations of these years exist

There were over one hundred Reverse Dies used for the 1944 George VI coins. As far as can be determined, the last two digits were entered individually on each die. This one is a 'high last 4' variety.

Thanks for that link there are a lot of variations. Charlton and Trends seem to agree on a major varieties of narrow date and wide date. Do you agree that this seems to be narrow date due to the two 4's almost touching? Also what is your thoughts on grade? I am thinking EF

Overall it would fall into a ND variety. Grade looks VF 30 from the pictures to me.

Nice half, do I detect a clash between the Union Jack and crown?

On some of the 1944's you will see the 9 and the first 4 almost touching, and on some you will see the $'s touching.... when you have both of these conditions together, then you will have a true "narrow date".

On some 1944's you will see asignificant space between the 9 and the 4, and on others you will see a space between the 4's...when both exist together you will have a true "wide Date"

On the 1944's you will see that the positioning of the last 4 varies vertically with repect to the hoof... ie. you will see a high 4 (this coin) with many intermediate heights to a 'Low 4' where the crossbar on the 4 is significantly lower than the hoof.

There are at least 10 4/4 Double Punches (repunches) and the one shown in the latest Charlton is a 4/4/4 Triple Punch.

Yes, there is a partial Clashmark.... the 1943,1944 and 1945's are very prone to Clashmarks..
