I would appreciate your opinion on these coins? I'm thinking of buying one of them but still undecided on which one to get. The 1851 seems to have more eye appeal than the other one.

The 1851 does have more eye appeal IMO but the 1848 has less wear.I'd say AU55 on the 1848 and the 1851 EF40.If it were me I would get the 1848.

Hi Shatsi

I see the coins as about equal in grade,, both AU ,, but I'm a sucker for the chocolate brown of the 51 !!

Im not so sure that the 48 has not been tampered with,, the color if accurate looks un natural to me.

Hi Rick,
The dealer grade is 1851-AU55 and 1848-AU50

I too like the 1851 for the color. The dark areas makes me think it might have been cleaned at somepoint but then again most of these coins are.

I'm the wrong person to ask, but I would suggest attributing them before deciding - one might be a much rarer variety than the other. Susan (Mom) has skills in that direction. She helped me attribute one I had.

Both look to be EF's and I agree with you, the 1851 has the most appeal.

Thank you for your help, I've decided to go with the 1851 since it has more eye appeal and doesn't look like its cleaned.

I've PM Susan, hopefully she'll take a look too.

Shatsi, the color looks kinda "funky" to me on the '48. The fields look too "pinkish", a decent indication that it has been dipped, and possibly recolored. True, it does have a bit more detail than the '51, but the '51 looks like it has original surfaces. If those photos are accurate (colorwise) I'd go for the '51 in a heartbeat, but I'd be hesitant to get the '48.

Just my opinion.

The 1848 does not look right.

I'd go with the 1851 -- a nice chocolate brown, probably AU-53 or 55.
