I saw this coin and I just had to get it. I like the Spanish colonial coins, but I don't know very much about them, so hopefully I won't come to regret buying this. Any thoughts on the coin, and can anyone recommend any books on the subject?
You should acquire "The Practical Book of Cobs" by Daniel Sedwick and Frank Sedwick. Cobs are fun but require some research to understand them. You also need a good scale.
Beautiful (and looking genuine) 2 reales cob from Potossy - essayer V - minted in 1692 under the reign or Carolus II (1665-1670) Those coins are almost never complete (it's missing half the legend, the 2 over the shield) - but you have two dates, complete essayer on both side, complete mint ... a beautiful and scarce example :)
That is a nice cob. It has obviously been used as a store of wealth as a bullion coin, because of the nice condition. I can't grade it, because I know nothing about grading this series.
