Came across this $1 coin the other day. It has a noticeable "crater" in it. To my eye it doesn't look like usual post mint damage.
Is it possible a piece of grit (or at least some foreign particle) could have been pressed with the coin?

Mint-Or-Post-Mint-Damage?

Opinions would be appreciated.

Nancy has advise "Re the 1988 $1, check to see if there's any sign of a 'starburst' or bump on the rev immediately under the crater. If there's not, then it will be a strike through of some foreign material that got between the dies as the coin was minted. Hard to say what the foreign material might be, sometimes oil, grease but as a rule the marks they leave aren't so deep, just a bit rough. It looks like something pretty hard was between the dies.

Having said that, if there is a 'starburst' or bump on the rev, then it's Post Mint Damage, man made."

No sign of anything on reverse opposite so, looks like it was struck that way.

Thanks Nancy

It may be an outside job but in no way this is worth any premium for this different coin image
Good question Jeff
