1939 Mercury Dime, Strike Doubling?

jmkendall Pillar of the Community United States 1590 Posts	Posted 04/18/2011 10:57 pm I just got this from an old coin saver. Almost all the letters and numbers on the obverse are "doubled". The "1" and "9" on the date as well as the "E" in Liberty show the most. To me the "1" almost screams Strike Doubling. But the "E" and the motto give me pause. Anyway thought it more prudent to ask those with more experiance. Thanks Report this Post to the Staff

arsave Valued Member United States 225 Posts	Posted 04/19/2011 10:23 pm Take a look at the date on this double die. True double dies have splits. Strike Doubling is always flat. I was pretty sure it was Strike Doubling but everytime I think I have it down,; I see an example that I would swear was Strike Doubling; only to be told it was the "real deal". lol. Seeing your pics, ARsave, I see what you are saying and I'm taking away that both features should be on the same "level"? That would make sense. Again thank you for the educational answer.
