I had the priviledge to purchase 300 SBA dollars at face value recently. I went throught the lot and kept back the BU coins and the 1999 coins and any 1981 coins without any attention to anything else. I also singled out the Wide Rim/Near date coins in 1979. And out of the 300 searched, I found two.

I see the ebay sales going from nothing to stupid for these coins. Does anyone know the story behind the Wide Rim/Near date variety? I have a total of 3 1979 varieties of this type now. I'm wondering what the future of this coin is.

ebay is giving mixed feelings about this. All with some examples selling for over $80 and others less than $10. It's still a premium over the face value. What is the collector view point? I have some nice ones. BU if not one that is AU and a strong strike too. I can see the toes of the eagle.

My peers, what say you?

I think the variety is highly collectible and I pick up all I can if its a good deal. The reasons for low sales on ebay basically has to do with collector interest in the series as a whole- not many people collect SBA- the coin has a lot of negative connotations. It's not exactly the prettiest depiction of a person on a coin for one. For 2nd, it was too close in size to a quarter, and for 3rds, it was a very short-lived series- with just 4 dates (79-81, 1999) and most are commons except for the 1981 (and even these can be picked up for under 5 bucks in most places.

I think this variety is a key date but right now it is a sleeper. It will take off at some point. It should rightfully be placed on Dansco albums because it is, in my opinion, not a complete set without this wide rim variety.

I know I didn't consider MY set complete until I got one. I'd just hold onto them. I think this will be a coin worth more later.

This is interesting and makes me wonder why anyone would pay much more than face.
