I'm really not at all good at grading these and if someone after me can provide what to look for in grading these in the G-EF range, that would be great.
Based on its appearance, it looks like a VG. Full rims and letters, date sharp. Shield lines visible. Reverse lines in the III not seen in picture, so I don't think this is in the VF-EF range. Also looks like it has been cleaned.
I'd say VG / cleaned. The Shield is starting to blend into the Star. Also, each point of the star actually fields to a ridge /|\. The extent of the ridge wear is a good grade indicator.
I'd say about F-12 w/ cleaning. Wouldn't you know, the F-12 coin featured in my 6th Edition ANA Grading Standards book is an 1852! Even though it's been cleaned, it's still a nice coin none-the-less!
