Not genuine- the peripheral devices are incredibly strong in relation to the mushy center, some of the reverse rays are broken, and some of the crown rays are missing. The reeding looks funky the way it rides up on the rim, possibly applied after the "coin" was struck. I would love to find a genuine Peace dollar with peripheral devices that strong but they simply were not designed that way.

Thanks for jumping in biokemist6.
This came in to my local shop yesterday. When the owner was told
that this coin was fake, he ended up just leaving it there.

They let me play with it. I have been showing it around, less than
half new it was a fake coin.

It is also light at 24g.

I thought it would be a good coin to show CCF members a example
of a fake coin

At first, I focused on the date thinking it was a 1923 altered to 1928. Then I realized I was missing the forest for the trees For educational purposes, I took the effort of describing the major detail problems. I could have just typed FAKE! but that would not really help anyone learn counterfeit detection

Other than the number "8" I would have been calling this a cleaned coin.
Comparing it to a genuine coin the difference becomes obvious (in the 8)

I don't have the discerning eye of biokemist though

Thanks for the lesson

I saw the reeding difference too, but until I compared it to a real one, it was hard to put a finger on it. Good eye, biokemist. And thanks for the lesson GoldRush58!
