I'm getting ready to send some coins into NGC for grading/slabbing and yield to the power on estimates of MS'ness of the 1902 Indian Head cent. It has a very deep glow to it and I would call it RD not RB. Thoughts? Opinions? Paleoguy

I would say, without coin in hand, MS63RD.

There seems to be quite a few very small marks or hairlines in the fields, plus that curving line across ITED in the first photo. The marks may hold it down to MS-62 or so. It does look like a mint state coin with RD color. Would you be satisfied if it came back MS-62RD? I think it has a shot and maybe the marks are more severe in the pictures than in real life.

The marks are more severe in the photos due to the lighting angle than in real life. The head is pretty much mark free and the semi-circle starting above the "N" and arching around to the "S" in States appears to be a die crack.

It's tough to grade from photo's but I don't know if the grading company will designate a lower MS coin with the RED description. I also think from the pictures the coin looks cleaned, but my guess for grade would be MS61-MS63RB. I'm curious to hear what the actual grade comes back.. Good Luck

I agree that it is a really nice looking coin but you would have to be a big fan of slabbed coins to spend tne money doing that. I'm a lousy grader but unless that coin is a MS-64 or higher, it is only worth about $40 to $80 if purchasing one. And seling a little less so the investment for slabbing to me is just not worth the price. Of course I'm a Album person so that coin would go right into my Albums.

Good points all. I suppose I'll sell it. It was in my 7070 but I jumped for an '81 Proof Indian to replace it.. Thanks for the input! Watch for it on ebay @ paleoguy45...

MS-62, sending it in would be a gamble if you are looking to sell or profit from this... But if you are just a fan of slabs, and are doing it for the aesthetic look of it that would be ok...
