Adam_E is right, they are not the same thing. I don't know the series well enough to determine if it's an SMS or business strike from a scan, unfortunately. The obverse hair detail looks a bit too mushy though.

Does the coin have a brilliant proof-like finish? The rim and reeding look quite sharp so I would say there is a good chance this quarter is from a Special Mint Set. Where did you get it?

This coin actually come straight out of the San Francisco mint bag in 1967. All 50 coins look just like this, this is the one I put in my collection. I don't know why but the SF coins looked to have better strikes and better luster than the P and D mints, I don't know you tell me. All bag coins I purchased come from Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas TX.

This is a little surprising since it's such a hammered strike. It is very clean and a very desirable coin.

It was made by SMS dies as evidenced by the fact that the die was basined. Not all the dies had their fields flattened like this but only SMS dies did. These dies were generally used about 30,000 strikes and then removed and used to strike regular circulation coins in San Francisco. This die shows little wear but could have struck about this number of coins and survived it well.

I'm not familiar with any bags of "50". Were these some special mint product?

It's not bag of 50, it's your bag coins that come from the mints. It weighs somewhere around 40 to 50 pounds, that's how banks get their coins. I actually get them in rolls. My dad started doing this in the 40s and I have carried it on, sorry to say my 21 year old son has no desire of coins at all and probably cash in my 1000 plus rolls of coins at face value.

Oh, OK.

Yes, they came in $1000 bags (4000 coins).

I've seen SMS looking coins of in the S mint bags so it's not surprising your's is so nice. The services would probably grade it SMS unfortunately since it looks like one.

You might want to go through the rolls yourself to see if you have any of the scarcities. If you have the '83-P it already goes for over $1000. Most of the coins in these rolls will not bring much money because there just isn't much demand but as you no doubt know a lot of the rolls do list for $40 and more.

The coins I use is the one right off the top, their shotgun rolls and I want them to stay intact.
