Hi there,
Sorry for bumping an old thread.
I've collected coins since I was young(mainly British and Irish)and I'm very fond of the 1860-1901 Victorian penny's. I've spent a little time trying to collect and identify the variations, but was a little stuck with one I found today. To my eye it looks like an 1862/1...I have a copy of the auction catalogue of the late Laurie Bamford and I noticed in there that he said he only knew of one other. To sum up, does anyone know if it's rarity status is still as he says, or are there others out there?
Many thanks, Steve

Hi Marz,
I will take a few pics later and try to post them here.
Is it simple to post pics here?

There are definately signs of something under the bottom of the 2.
To me it looks similar to Gouby: BP 1862 G (apperently 4 are known), rairty PU
Worth further investigation...
Maybe you could post some more pics (at slightly diferent angles)?

Thanks marz, I'll see if I can get a few more uploaded. I did try different angles at the time but they didn't give good results.

Here's a pic of the obverse that I took last week, thr B of BRITT is close to head, as mentioned by Laurie Bamford...I'll try to get other angle shots over the weekend. Cheers, Steve

More help needed Does this look like an 1863(open lower loop in 3 of date?) there was an example in the Bamford lot. mentioned as "Gouby B" "Jerrams in his 2001 census only knew of six specimens" Only paid 10p for this.... Thoughts most welcome

Steve, Your picture needs a better close up of the "3" to tell for sure, but in the picture you have posted, it does look like an open 3. Another way to tell, is to look at the left end of the top of the 3 (the horizonal line)...the little end at the left of the horizontal line of the 3, will have a sharp "pick like" end at the downward slope. Again, your picture is not close enough to tell!
