I was informed by a member that one of my coins up for auction is this variety. Does it carry any premium? It's about F-15 with minor problems (old dipping).

I've heard this is a common variety and I'm pretty sure I've seen examples in bins of low-grade Barber halves. I don't think they carry any premium and personally would not pay extra for one. Just my opinion! |

Well, I believe that they carry a premium.
They are somewhat scarce, having checked hundreds of the date, and found only about 4 of them
But, I could be prejudiced, I was the 'discoverer' of the variety.

The Cherrypicker's guide lists a normal F-12 1909-S for $29 and the inverted S mintmark variety at $75. At VF-20, it's $76/$150. Whether or not the market will bear that or not is another question... but there does appear to be some sort of a premium.

actually not really much of a premium, I've owned two and sold it. A friend of mine has one of the top pops for a inverted mintmark and it doesn't go for more than the normal one

I looked through my Barbers and found this 1909-S half. Is this the inverted mintmark variety? I presume the wide end of the S should be at the bottom and this one certainly looks upside-down. If it is the inverted mintmark maybe I'll put it on ebay with a modest "cherry-picker" premium on the opening bid. Perhaps some collector out there would value it higher than I would.    |

Guess a little research has answered my own question... This is a PCGS-graded coin (VF-20) that was identified as the inverted mintmark type, with an FS-50-1909S-501 variety designation. The mintmark clearly matches my coin, so mine is also the inverted type. The PCGS coin sold for $172 in 2011, close to what a "normal" type would cost. I conclude my coin should not bring much of a premium. Still, I can list it and see what happens.  |

Jaobler, you are right. These aren't bringing much of a premium anymore. I have seen quite a few. I search high and low for Barber halves and the 09-S Inv MM is one I always look for. I have seen quite a few. They must have received some mileage out of that reverse die! |
