I feel very confident through the NGC pics that the coin/holder I bought was the same one graded by NGC by spotting small flaws and small random marks on the edge of the holder. You have a good eye to catch those details--and your pics are far better than NGC's.  It appears NGC focused on the label and not the coin.  Perhaps that will suffice to verify most coins? |

However, the last time I looked, the NGC site had info on these and showed how the Chinese made some errors with their NGC labels - including a misspelling  Although I have to wonder what the Chinese might do in the future b/c they have been improving their methods over the years. I'd like to see NGC focus on the coin itself. |

It also helps if you have the slab in hand to get the light angle just right. The easiest flaw to see in this case was 2 small dings or marks on the tails side just below the "O" in "OF". But there were others in the coin rim edge and the holder edges. Edited by GoThunder

I wish they would all take a picture of every coin submitted just because of this reason. People can look at the picture on the TPG's website when it was graded and see if it matches the coin for sale. If they would all do this it would just about put all the counterfeit slabs out of business because you could do this. It doesn't cost any extra for NGC to take a picture of the coin like this, they do it for every coin they grade now. Its not like the photography service they charge for where they send you pictures of your coin when you had it graded |

Yeah I see now NGC started this in Oct 2008, it doesn't look like PCGS has it that I can tell. Notice the NGC printing under the "EARLY RELEASES" on the front label. I'm thinking that watermark goes on randomly and no 2 would be alike. I could also find a small flaw on the heads side just to the right of the lady's hip on both pics. I'm the proud winner of this one too. I don't usually go for proofs, but I got this one for about the price of the bullion coin. Edited by GoThunder

Didn't PCGS come up with manufactured DNA that could only be matched by their lab samples?

Yea, I think them taking picture is the results of the fake coin slabs. It makes it much harder to replicate. Because now you don't only have to create a fake holder and authentic labels, but they also have to make sure the type of label and slab is correct, ut that all the labels and coins look exactly as pictured...
Its a fairly strong deterent
