Got a email from a guy looking to sell out some of his silver at spot.

So I'm curious what everyone's opinion is on what coins to go for at spot, I told him I would take any morgans & barbers this individual had , which ended up being quite a ton , so now I'm interested in what I should ask for next time I go out and have people offer me larger lots of coins.

Being more of a collector than a bullion buyer, 80% is fine, but it would need some numismatic value for me to buy at 100% spot. I don't really have a herd mentality to rush into bullion, although I do see silver more convenient than gold, because of the pricing. More folks can afford the stuff; bigger market for small amounts.

I have a lot of silver coins that would be valued at between 1X and 5X spot.

Even at 100%, I would still ask myself 'Do I want to buy this?'

Go for Mercury dimes.

Here in Phoenix, dealers are paying 63% of spot silver price today. They add $4 apiece for any silver dollars in good shape. Spot at $36.20. They are paying $22.80 but they want to buy more than $10 face value of silver coins to get that price. They pay a bit more for $100 face value.

I had a similar question to wrestle with recently, but the opposite side. I had a bunch of "junk silver" I inherited and wanted to consolidate some. So I had to decide what to keep and then try to get the best I could for the rest.

So I kept all dollars ( and would probably buy those first in your position ). Kept most halves ( only selling the "worn" 1964s, 40%s, and some well worn franklins ). Kept all Standing Liberty quarters and Washingtons before 1940 - not a lot of either. Kept all barber and most Mercury dimes. Sold most others.

Got 10.5X for the 40%s and 24X for the dimes, quarters, halves.

I thought that pretty fair since spot was around 25X and the second best offer I had was 22X - most offered in the 17-20 range and one guy I turned into the BBB tried to tell me that 10X was a generous offer - LOL. I asked one "we buy gold&silver" guy what he'd offer and he said 20 was his best. I told him the guy down the street just offered me 24 and he asked me where because HE wanted to take him up on that offer. LOL So I went ahead.

The premium they're willing to pay on dollars, particularly Morgans - as surf22 said it is $4 in AZ but was more here in OH, would make me think those are the best "at spot" values to buy. Thus I hung onto all of mine and most of the halves as well. Collecting Washington quarters and dimes is not appealing to me personally tho either - for some reason.

Good Luck!

Reason I ask is I run into alot of guys trying to sell silver at spot.

Told a guy id take anything he had before 1940, I ended up with 20 Barber halves, he said they all were junk, only 3 were g4, rest were g8 and one was f12 with being semi-rare dates.

I purchased 20 Barber halves at spot. One was a 1915-d in about f12. A few were pre-1900 as well.
