I knew I wouldn't be able to put together a full set of Morgans and Peace dollars, so a few years ago I purchased a blank dollar album to hold my collection.

The album is called The Official U.S. Mint Large Dollars. It's gray with blue stripes at top and bottom...the stripes are decorated with white stars. There are even metal corner protectors on the covers. It seems well constructed and attractive. The back cover has a CoA that says "H.E. Harris & Co. produces the United States Mint coin albums from carefully selected acid-free material and are of the highest quality coin poroducts on the market today."

Recently I purchased a Dansco 7172 (an interesting book IMO) and as I was transferring my coins from the Harris album (after 4.5 years), the rims of my white coins were all toned gold.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

I'm glad you posted this, and interested in hearing what everyone else has to say as well. I'm using some of these albums for silver coins.

I have no experience with these albums, so this comes from my use of Dansco albums for over 26 years.

Where did you keep your albums? That will have a lot to do with how the coins will tone.

The albums are not air tight, so anything in the air will get to the coins. They should be kept in a place with a stable temperature and low humidity.

I was thinking this was the type that really toned Morgans very well but I was wrong, it is the old Wayte Raymond albums that I was thinking of

If I recall correctly, the ones you are talking about are more like twenty years old, but I could be wrong. These "Official US Mint" albums mad by Harris are a lot different than the Harris albums I remember from my youth.

The album was packed away with the rest of my coins in a full plastic Sterilite (20 gallon) tote, stored in a second-floor bedroom closet. I suppose it's possible that the plastic tote gave off gasses that affected the coins, but the airflow in the album was close to non-existent.

The toning was around the edges, where the coins came into contact with the album. I'm pretttty sure the album is the culprit.

It is possible then that the pages are the culprit. Again, I have no direct experience with the product. I hope someone that has can make a comment.
