I use the ANA grading guide as my bible also. And for the 1932D quarter, I believe this is a solid good 4 any day. It certainly beats the AG 3 one that I have.

In the Notes section at the end of Washington quarters:
"The obverse motto is always weak on coins of 1932 and early issues of 1934."
So the weak motto on this coin is normal and does not affect the grade.

It seems to me that these TPGs are not consistent with their grading values and standards. I have seen coins slabbed that screamed AT but there they were in a slab with a grade. There are other coins that people have sent in knowing that the toning was natural and got it back in a body bag. The TPGs should take a stand and either accept all toned coins and grade them or reject any toned coin that comes in. Also, I have seen blatant under-graded coins and I have seen it the other way around with over-graded coins that are obvious. I don't really know what to say to you about your toned Morgan, but I'm sorry for what they did to you and I can totally relate to you being angry. I would be madder than a wet hen!

6th edition

coinczar, I sent two of my black beauties to NGC for grading. They got a straight up MS63. No notation at all about the fact the coins are BLACK. So obviously it isn't tarnish which would bring an environmental damage details, its not toning or that would have been noted. The dealer I sent them through is trying to find out why there was no designation. I already know the answer. I didnt pay enough for them type the designation into the label maker. God only knows what PCGS would have done.
I AM DONE WITH THOSE TWO.

ANACS also charges to attribute varieties in case you didn't know...nothing wrong with that..it costs money to make coins more valuable.

Can't say PCGS is not sleeping on the job sometimes......way over-rated grading company.

I know they charge extra for designations. All of them do. Its just twice as much for PCGS and NGC.

As I have seen and talked with many who are well educated with the TPG's and PGCS IT IS ABOUT the money....letting coins into the population only decreases the values they have already in the population as supply and demand play an important part of there guarenteed values....
in there today's standards,
an ms 64 coin "must be at least" MS64.5 not just ms 64..
all coins must "exceed" the minimum grade by a half point....
Here is where the delema arises.....this 1885 lacks any issues on the face..a clear ms 65 candidate....so this coin does exhibit MS 64 plus quality but does not make MS 65+ so its reverted to MS 64.....
NOW the delema is only magnified by "ALL THE PREVIOUSLY graded coins IN HOLDERS that are not as good as this who have the MS65 designation.......
THESE COINS would not hold to today's standards I think you would all agree....
Yet what does this say about the coins we hold in the graded slabs? that won't meet the criteria of todays standards?
Its all about the money and submission money..income for any business not for the consumers protection of value invested....
There is a saying..."BUT THE COIN NOT THE HOLDER"
at this rate you need BUY coins at ms 66, for an MS65 price

FOR the Questionand meaning of SP
SP means Specimen, or...a coin produced in the coins developement.. The coins "dies" are meant to finalize what the production coins will look like... the image is chosen..dies are made..if they like the looks of them, coins will be struck to see how they will look like...and yes...there are few coins strike so the coins will the MS 67 and upwards..MS 67 is a low grade for such a die..
it's basically a minimum grade for a die which has few strikes on it, so now you can understand his frustration...however any of the "slightest of flaw" will yield MS67 "under magnification"....not in hand... I hope this helps your understanding..
