Can somebody give me a fair price of what a '1883 Carson City Silver Dollar Coin' is worth? I've had one coin shop make a offer for $110 for it, but I've been listing else where for $200 to 300. This coin is from the second mixed batch that was sorted and placed in a sealed plastic case. Any information would be helpful and thanks! Edited by riftcamp 07/10/2011 12:56 pm

riftcamp- This technically is not a "modern US coin," but I'm happy to help out. This coin appears to be Brilliant Uncirculated and in the government packaging. Carson City silver dollars are rather scarce and are quite sought-after by collectors. I do not have my price guides on hand at the moment, but I can assure you that your coin is easily worth more to you than $110.

An ungraded GSA 1883CC dollar sells on ebay for between $175-180. After Ebay/PP fees I can see the dealer offering $110 so he will make a little profit. If you want to sell it yourself you could net around $150 (after fees)

Sorry about posting in the wrong section, and thanks for your input Archraz and Foxwoods on this coin. That gives me a good idea of it's value. What source would you use to get a value of a coin, I have other coins I received in a inherit. I could use the help.

I don't disagree, but there is a difference between the GSA Silver dollar and the GSA Uncirculated Silver dollars. The latter were selected out from the GSA hoard for quality. The rest were put in the silver dollar cases as BUs. You will see more bag marks, etc on them, and they typically have less premium.
In the case of this 83, in a GSA Unc silver dollar case, say a MS 63, might realize $160- 190, depending on the buyer, a 83 Silver dollar, probably $20-40 less. The same for a MS64 should bring about 225 plus, in a GSA Silver dollar case, much less as it would not reach near a 64.

So the value of the coin is different because it was never circulated but came from a ‘special mixed selection', so the value is different than a true uncirculated coin. That was my assumption, but wanted to double check. Thanks Southsav. What does the 'GSA DC 73 -11321' number mean that are printed at the bottom of the pages? I know the GSA is General Services Administration, but have no clue of the numbers.

It's still a Mint State coin, just one of a lower grade than the ones GSA labeled as "Uncirculated." MS60-63, say, as opposed to 63 or better. Their choice of verbiage was a little misleading. I'm guessing the document number is the sale identification - a Google search brings up multiples of that number referenced in GSA Morgan sales.

Actually I think you may be getting some incorrect information here on the Forum with regards to values of the "Silver Dollars" vs the "Uncirculated Silver Dollars". Many of the coins put in the second grouping of "Silver Dollars" were scratched but a large portion were put there simply because of toning or coloring on the coins. I have seen beautiful MS65 rainbow toned dollars in the "Silver Dollar" slab, often higher grade coins than the blast white low 60 range coins in the "Uncirculated Silver Dollar" slabs. You have to examine the coin itself. Also realize that when these all came out, there was little or no premium for the GSA case and thousands and thousands were cracked out and submitted to TPGs for grading, lowering the overall population remaining in the GSA holder. I think you should be able to get $180 up for your coin if it is not scratched or other wise damaged. With the multitude of collectors now that like toned dollars, don't downplay the value based on the GSA slab without carefully examining the coin itself. I believe the cert you have with the designation GSA DC 73-11321 means your coin was coin 11321 in June 1973 sale which included 1882CC, 1883CC, 1884CC dollars remaining from the first sale in Oct 1972 as well as the entire supply of 1878CC, 1890CC and 1891CC dollars along with Mixed CC, Mixed uncirculated, and Mixed circulated dollars.

Well said except for the interpretation of GSA DC 73-11321. I'm by no means an expert, but I had originally thought that was probably the GSA's form # for those Silver Dollar cards. A quick check of over 20 GSA Silver Dollars on ebay tonight which come with those GSA cards confirms. All the cards have the same 73-11321 number. I think it safe to say it is a government form number for the cards, not a coin number. The 73 may very well be the year of the form but I only assume so.

Great information guys, the coins appears to be good state. I don't see anything major scratches or marks on it, just some light surface marks on the coin, the all impression of the coin looks great.
Thanks for all the information and this is a great forum.

i own both the uncirculated and the silver dollar version of the gsa cc morgans. here is a picture of just the regular silver dollar. The camera can be seen in the reflection but nothing I could do about it. The toning on the reverse is alot nicer in hand than my picture shows.

Beautiful coin and colors on the rev...strong MS63, could go MS64, but todays standards there's to many bag marks on the face.....I think $110 is way low...JMHO....There are a ton of them out there...minus 20% for there time and handling. is around 180 bucks..
