I just got back a group of coins that were stuck in the mail. I like the firm and I'm pleased with the grades. But I am a little puzzled with the labelling. I received a 1922 Far Rim five cents back graded MS-64. But there's no labelling on the folder as to what variety it is. It's of interest to me because the 2011 Charlton's doesn't list any 1922 Far Rim graded above MS-63. So how is Charlton's getting its info if grading services don't label this variety? Also I had sent in four large cent varieties covered in the 2011 catalogue at the back and I paid extra for labelling. None came back labelled and the explanation was simply that no cat. # has been created yet for any of these. So are those folks who have worked so hard to create this section going to supply cat # so we can get our related large cents graded? It would be a big plus.

The grading might pre date recognition by ICCS of the variety.

CCCS competition with their grading and acknowledgement of varieties has given Charton's and subsequently Trends pricing guide more material to work with than they once had. This in turn has forced ICCS at times to put the variety on the holder but this is relatively recent in my recollection.

Thanks for the reply! I can only think uniformity in labelling will benefit the hobby. I see some of the more recent GV five cent varieties given full pricing in Charlton's up through the MS states. A puzzler. I assume ICCS doesn't label these either and so where the Charlton info is coming from re: pricing is a bit of a head scratcher. I can't think that CCCS is filling all the gaps. I've been watching ebay price action on Victoria large cent varieties covered in the 2011 Charlton's. More than a little disappointing and this is where decisive action on labelling would be an asset.

I didn't meant to imply CCCS did all that variety attribution, I am implying their presence has forced ICCS to do it as well. I was commenting that your coin may pre-date this period.

Hope that helps clarify. Cheers!

It's still a bit of a conundrum when it comes to Charlton pricing. The popular guide states in bold print that its pricing is based on "Canadian certified coins." Granted the creators of the catalogue consult a number of different vendor sources but if the key ingredient is certification I can't understand how Charlton's is finalizing variety values especially given that the grading companies, at least one that I know for sure, are reluctant to label.

ICCS and CCCS also both drop the ball on well established varieties from time to time. I have a "far 6" that's simply called a "1926" by one of these companies.

I also have a very silvery looking cupro-nickel coin that was graded "MS-65 red" by one of these guys, and then crossgraded "MS-65 red" by the other lol
Power of suggestion I guess.
