This thought kind of originated out of another thread on albums, but I thought the discussion deserved a new thread. I have thought about this for a while and I am somewhat undecided. So you're collecting Lincoln cents and you're down to the one remaining prize coin for your Dansco album. Let's say its a 1909 SVDB for the Lincolns (or feel free to substitute like 1895-O for Barber dimes) You finally get this coin and its slabbed (NGC or whatever reputable grader you can think of). Would you break the slab to put it in your album? Or keep it in the slab? What would you do? or what have you done in this situation?

I've cracked about 5 slabs for my 7070 so far... So I'm definitely not opposed to it.
I think if you're keeping the coin as an investment coin -- which many key dates are, keep it in the slab. If you're more worried about completing your collection for the hobbyist in you, crack it out. Just try to get a good look at the coin to make sure it's not overgraded before cracking it out.. If you ever want to reslab it in the future, it would be disappointing to place it in a slab with a lower grade.

Most certainly crack out the coin for the album. I collect coins, not plastic.

If it is a really rare/high priced/highly faked item then I might be tempted to put a "filler disc" of some sort in the album slot with the TPG name and grade and keep it slabbed. Also, people might tend to keep it slabbed to avoid oxidation, tarnish, etc...since the slab offers better protection from the elements than an album does. However, I am not too interested in the investment value of a coin and am most likely never going to sell it (never say never though I guess), so I would probably break it out and affix the slab label to the inside cover of the album and enjoy the album as a whole.

I only have a few slabbed coins in my collection. I just place a note in the spot "see slab".

You know my answer... But for those that do not, yes, I will crack a slab to complete my album. My coins are, in no way shape or form, an investment. They are a hobby and for my own personal enjoyment. I do not enjoy seeing a empty hole, or a hole with something in it that does not belong there. This is how I come to my decision. I buy the coin to complete the set and fill the hole in the album. For those that feel like their coins are (also) an investment, then I can understand the dilemma. The slab seems to offer the best protection of value and liquidity. If you are investing, you have to ask yourself why you are building a set to begin with. I do not believe coins are a good investment, but others will disagree. I strongly believe that a set of coins (especially in an album) is the worst way to invest in coins. Investment type coins perform best individually and seem to perform best (unfortunately) in slabs.

jbuck I like the way you think! that's what I feel too. I save (and sometimes buy if its cheap) other stuff too in the hope I can trade or sell it later, but basically I collect because it brings me satisfaction.
I go to these coins shows and I am somewhat put off because the collecting is secondary to the bullion value. I have a cousin like me that started as a collector and is now a dealer and does almost exclusively gold because that's where he says all the money is in it for the dealers.

I crack all of mine to put in the album. If I buy them slabbed, it is because it is the only one I can find, or it is because this way I know that it is real. Whoever gets my collection can have them slabbed back up, when they do what they want to do with it.
