This was in a "National Numismatic Certification" slab.

What do you think their grade was? (for what it's worth...)

I think that is an AU53 with some small scratches and a hint of cleaning. I hope they didnt dock you too hard for that though I do not know how accurate they tend to be. If this was STAR I would say they called is MS72DMPL++!!
Rest in Peace

NNC would give it an MS-63 imho. I'd say AU-58 cleaned.

Hmmm.. I'm not real familiar with NNC, but it wouldnt surprise me if they didnt go MS-63 if they arent so reputable.

The real grade... I'd go AU55.. possibly cleaned as well.. the area around the date and DOL are suspicious to me.. not sure if that's part of the planchet.. or where someone tried to clean it up?

I wouldn't go much higher than AU-50 on this one quite a bit of wear on the obverse with some evidence of a prior cleaning it may also net out in the XF range.

You guys/girls are GOOD!

I actually agree with the NNC on this one (who would have thunk it?)

An AU-55 grade seems just about right on to me.

I agree with the grade too. What appears to be wear looks more like slight weakness of strike, not at all unusual in this series.
