Here is a 5 franc silver from Napoleon III reign - I'm pretty sure it's genuine, but it seems unusually clean to me. I can't tell, but maybe you guys can - could this coin have been cleaned? The detail seems pretty distinct - what condition do you think?

Thanks!

Steve

Very probably. Very few 150 year old silver coins remain tarnish-free, and nobody had any qualms about cleaning coins for more than half of this coin's existence.

Perhaps more worryingly, I'm seeing what could be signs of wear - something I obviously shouldn't be seeing if the coin really were still in brilliant Unc condition.

The pics are a little small to be conclusive. Any chance of larger ones? On the basis of what I'm seeing, I'd grade it EF.

There does look like wear on the wreath (obv) and the crown and other high areas. This would kick it out as an UNC. Look at it under a good magnification. Look for wear and any possible cleaning marks.

I could see this being AU. The details seem mushy, not overly worn.

Could just be a weak strike. Its it was a strong strike and XF, you will still see center lines in the leaves of the wreath. If you can still see them, its probably XF then.

Definitely and Old cleaning though. Likely a Dip and not a scrub. hard to tell from those photos, but if you dont see hairlines all over the place, just that flat dull look, it was just a dip.

Better pictures I could tell you for sure.

All great replies - I'll see if I can't get a better picture done - The lines in the laurel leaves are visible w/o magnification, but there is one more interesting thing - the edge of this coin with the DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE is not clean like the faces - it is much darker, like it was left as is when they cleaned the faces. Would this be evidence against a dip? I will be selling this one on ebay and will mention in the notes that it has been cleaned at some time in the past - too bad, but I think it's still a nice coin.

Thanks guys!
