Based on NGC grading, I would say AU-53.

Hey ACE Mike - Just curious, but what are NGCs tendencies on bust half coins that you've seen?
I like this coin better in hand than the pic.. a bit more luster, and a more attractive toning than I could capture on photo.

AU-55 seems a little high for this coin, could be the small areas of remaining luster that brought the grade up.

Maprince, I have found that NGC tends to overgrade a bit in the EF and AU categories, say by about 3 to 5 points. In the photos, your half looks like about EF-45 to AU-50, so I just kind of added 5 points or so to what I thought the grade was, and arrived at my guess that way. Came pretty close, too! NGC tends to do a bit better in the AU-55 area - often their AU-55's really are AU-55. I think they are worst at about AU-50; there are a lot of EF-45 bust halves in NGC AU-50 slabs, coins that I consider EF-45 based more on a lack of luster (other than traces between the stars) more so than having too much wear. My opinion only, others may disagree.

Perhaps the picture didnt do justice to the luster on the coin - and thus the dings.. I can actually see a decent cartwheel when rotating the coin.. I'd estimate about 50% of luster remains.. Pretty much all around the protected areas, and pretty absent from the fields.
Thanks for the observation ACE Mike -- it's great to take in the observations of everyone out there -- that's why I asked. I know to give a little more scrutiny to NGC busts in that grade range than some from PCGS... But again, that's why you always buy the coin, not the slab :)

I think I need to visit the photography section to learn how to better photograph luster on coins like this.
