aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 07/14/2011 01:12 am Many a post, asking for a grade or opinion, results in comments of a cleaned coin...Yet MANY coins see in shops or online are BRILLIANT or BLAST WHITE... How is that? yet silver will tarnish? THIS POST is dedicated: to have Photo's, examples of CLEANED coins...BUT MIND YOU...this is not about to show a VG coin is shiny.....or an EF40 is shiny....these are obviously CLEANED.......This issue is about how to tell, "SEE" when you look at a coin, if its is suspect..... WE ALL give evaluations from our experience's of what comes up on line for our ADVICE......... ADVICE IS CHEAP.....?Yet my brothers and sisters...WE are not ignorant....WE HAVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE.. And this is an IMPORTANT subject... or is this a subject we need to hide? THIS POST is intended to have PHOTO's of cleaned coins so the many with out the experience, the casuall collector WILL NOT WASTE there money.... I encourage YOU all to post pictures to help us all. of the fine points of knowing and seeing a cleaned coin....ALADIN Report this Post to the Staff

I'm often concerned that my learning will come the hardway in regards to cleaned coins. Thanks to all the rest that give us examples of what to and not to look for. biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 07/14/2011 12:24 pm I think it is worthwhile to note that hairlines do not necessarily indicate a cleaned coin, you have to take the severity of the hairlines into account. Light parallel hairlines are typically caused by mishandling a coin, the 1824 Bust Half posted is a good example of that type of hairlining. Proofs are also very susceptible to mishandling hairlines. Yes, it should still impact the value to some extent but not as much as a cleaning IMO. Hairlines going in multiple directions and scrubby scratches are a stronger indicator of a cleaned coin- everyone should be able to recognize that type of cleaning with the coin in-hand. Chewyduck Valued Member United States 158 Posts	Posted 07/14/2011 7:36 pm These 2 were the first coins I ever bought, I paid 3.00$ each for them and I thought they were cool. Back then a coin was just a coin. But I think everything really old has a good likely hood of being cleaned at some point. You see many slabs marked "cleaned" but even though they are less valuable, they still get snapped up, because it's nice to have a very nice specimen even though it is cleaned. Over the years I have tried to go more quality than quantity, but I still find myself intrigued by some coins and will buy them just to have one. I have now startred to sell my cleaned silver coins for melt to a local dealer. Report this Post to the Staff
eddiespin Pillar of the Community United States 1547 Posts	Posted 07/14/2011 9:22 pm Hopefully this picture will zoom-up for you well. That's always a risk whenever I post pictures (I never know if they're going to zoom-up OK or not). The coins in the top pile are A-OK and the ones in the bottom pile are cleaned and retoned. Hopefully you can zoom-up well enough on some of the individual coins to see the difference as well as the reason collectors basically don't like cleaned coins. The ones on the top have some life left to those surfaces while the ones on the bottom don't and look dead. Hope this helps a little... aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 07/15/2011 02:00 am WOW and Thanks to all of you that have read and taken the time to post...your examples are fabulous...If I may make comments for those who have contributed to this post, FOR the casual reader BRICKCAT...a great photo of hair lines.. you see many old time collectors had there coins in the drawer or cabinet and as dust occurs they simply dusted them off...not realizing how soft silver is....The results are seen in his photo... By the way....Great doubbling of the nose to chin area! cool coin..how you all enjoy and see this... Whizzed coins....a term related to those who would polish the field areas to upgrade the coins over all grade....which means MONEY...NoHopes pictures are very good but LACK the detail to see the whizzinig...and that probubly due to its a very ole and PRO job,,,and the toning is even THIS is an important thing to know......it looks great...Noel Please upgrade your photo so we can all see why it is considered whizzed AND lets have a really BAD whizzed coin posted!!..... Fenton,,,,Great looking coin,,,Why would it be body bagged? This is something we all need to examine....as to why if you submitt a coin to TPG's why it would come back in a body bag....IF your coin does not have spotting or an uneveness in color.. indicating a cleaning some where in its life....if you submit it it should not come back in the body bag....This is why I am posting this thread.....SO we can all see the PROBLEM coins and why... For Fentons coin I would ask why you would agree or disagree.. Please respond.... BIOKEMIST..you bring up a very important Observation..... A 200 year old coin was not Boraxed or CLEANED?DIPPED cleaned in today's standards, Today we have chemicals which do this for us and have a resulting affect....This is the term we call cleaning... This post is to have great examples OF OBVIOUSLY cleaned coins AS well as Nohopes hard to see Whizzed coin..... MY MANY THANKS yo you all and please Continue to BRING IT ON... The person who I bought it from let me take it to a dealer friend of mine before I bought it. We both worked at the same place and I bought alot of coins from him. I told him it was whizzed and he said make a offer. I bought it for $20.00 I belive to long ago for me to remeber. Report this Post to the Staff
