1983 Cents Copper?

1982 was the transition year, so its unlikely that a 1983 would be copper. However, weighing it or the popsicle balance test can decide.

I realize that 1982 was the transition year....just have to accurately measure this one to be sure. I just thought I would ask here if there were any known 1983 cents in copper by mistake...if so it would be neat to find such a rare keeper. :-)

Yes ... there is at least one one known example of a 1983-P LMC struck on a copper planchet ... this coin is highlighted on page 75 of the 3rd edition of "Strike It Rich" ...

Many of us weigh our 1983 ... I submit that a scale accurate to 0.01 grams can be had for less than $25 ... and should be a part of your roll searching kit.

Let us know the weight of your 1983 ... 3.1 grams for copper versus 2.6 grams for a zilcoln.

Flip the coin in the air with your thumb...if it rings all the way to the top of the flip its copper...if it rings for a second and stops its zinc...test it with a known copper and a known zinc to hear the difference...then check your 83... then post your findings!
