Oldest overall: Olbia dolphin, anepigraphic, no idea what the type or approximate date is but it's clearly older than anything else I have Oldest coin-shaped: Pantikapaion tetrachalkon, ca. 220-210 BC Oldest silver: about two thirds of a Valerian I antoninianus (ORIENS AVGG, 253-260 AD) Oldest non-billon silver: assuming the seller did not misattribute it, late 14th century Suzdal something, very damaged so I can't read the legend Oldest non-billon silver I can trust the identification of: damaged (can't recall how at the moment) Moscow denga of Ivan III (1462-1505) Oldest dated: probably one of the Byzantine follises and half-follises Oldest dated I know the date of: 1517 Salzburg zweier (also oldest AD dated, and oldest undamaged silver) Oldest US: very worn, probably harshly cleaned, Matron Head large cent (ca. 1820-37) Oldest dated US: 1841 large cent Oldest US silver: Barber dime, can't recall the date Oldest English: preliminarily 1699 William III 4 pence, but I have some very worn copper coins that may be slightly older, and one large silver that is probably fake but would be slightly older if it was real Oldest Russian: see above for "oldest non-billon silver" Oldest undamaged Russian: Ivan IV sword kopek (ca. 1535-38) I probably missed some categories; if so, sorry. I have no gold coins (aside from Siberian copper).

Man, that's a lot of categories! It is an impressive list.

Quote: Man, that's a lot of categories! It is an impressive list. It's based on yours, you know One thing that I wanted to post but forgot: most of those categories would have already had the same answer when I previously posted on this thread three years ago (June 24, 2013). (And sadly I still never got myself to make a pic of the Salzburg zweier.) Aside from the confusing "some Byzantine" category for oldest with a date (which probably updated fairly recently), the latest update to that list would have been the two-thirds of an antoninianus, bought, IIRC, in early 2014. (I don't keep particularly good records of my purchases, sadly.) There's been a lot of coins added to my collection since then - including some nice ancient and medieval coins - but you wouldn't know that from any of those categories On second thought, there's a 2014 purchase (purchase thread here) that might actually be slightly older than the Pantikapaion coin; it's not attributed precisely enough to say if it is, in fact, older (and chances are it probably isn't).

I can't tell you what it is, but I will suggest that you get it out of that soft plastic flip.

I've purchased a coin in a BCW flip before and realized how soft it was.

I have a couple ancient coins, but collect mostly US coins and currency. Thank you, Debrajc. I'll figure out the photo posting eventually... Got it!

I don't currently have pics (I plan to post them later in the appropriate forum) but the oldest I can attribute is a Constantine Commemorative minted in Rome ca. AD 330. Looks like this (courtesy of http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com ): If it's real, the oldest would be a copper(?) Indian punchmarked coin ca. 2nd Century BC. but that will take some more research.
