I knew this! It's also the V.D.B. variety. Here is a story that mentions that as well.

https://www.space.com/17647-mars-ro...n-penny.html

The Lincoln Penny isn't MAHLI's only calibration target. The instrument also uses a "Joe the Martian" character, color references, a metric bar graphic and a stair-step pattern for depth calibration.

Another neat space coin is in my favorite US coin series, an 1864 Large Motto Two Cent Piece carried to the moon by Neil Armstrong. It also carries the distinction of the highest priced business strike Two Cent coin to be sold.

Thank you, westcoin! I wondered if it was a V.D.B.

I used to know this, and actually looked up new images of the penny every so often! But I think I've since forgotten, so thanks for the reminder. It's nice to see 2023 pics; I see the coin is holding up pretty well so far.

It is, indeed, a VDB, though the initials are hidden in the internals of the calibration target. It's a Philly mint coin, though.

Minor correction - the 1864 2c flew on Gemini, not to the moon. Gemini twins = 2 cents, get it?

kbbpll - opps, You are correct, I do know it wasn't on the moon, only went around the moon. DOH! Gemini of course, the Moon flights were designated Apollo.

Thanks for correcting my boo-boo!
