re "Genuine or not,the chinese fake slabs have me concerned if anything ebay is real, seller seems genuine but no guarantee its grade or authenticity.Downies sold it to seller or did they?.Downies watching this item
I would never buy a pre decimal over $500 unless its from a respected dealer, ebay is a lucky dip with 1930 pennies and be realistic,no one would be bidding $17k on a coin unseen from this auction site"
Each person has their own rules and limits of what they are comfortable doing. Clearly based on this auction there are people who dont share the same views as you and its those people we are guessing about :) (although it is possible they are shills)
If the item is not as described, why would you pay for it?
For a very expensive item, it is fair enough to get proper verification that the item is genuine and as described before payment.
A genuine seller of a very expensive item (in this case currently over $12000) should not have a problem with this being done. If they did have a problem with this being arranged, I think it would be fair enough to just walk away.
In an odd sort of way, I think there is less risk in buying a very expensive item, than a less expensive item where you are going to take less precautions (and hence more risk) about getting what you are paying for.
I agree that spending a lot of money on something you have never seen, based on some fairly poor photos, where descriptions are very subjective is crazy. If on the other hand you were to go and look at the item and decide that it is genuine, and set your price like that, you could get a bargain while others are thinking " ebay can be dodgy".
There are some items I am interested in which are much, much less that $12,000 which I am reluctant to buy sight unseen, even from a respected dealer, just because I would like to see it in the flesh to decide if I would be happy purchasing them. I am considering a flight to check them out for myself.
Not everything on ebay has to be sight unseen.
re "no one would be bidding $17k on a coin unseen from this auction site", you may well be right.
Just to see, I took a look at "completed listings" for "coins" ordered from "highest price", and the highest sale was just over $10000 and a few others at $10000 on the first page of results.
If it was genuine and as described in the ad, but was being sold in a dealers, do you think $17,000 would be a reasonable price?
