MobOfRoos, Floridapalms and aarong.

I tend to disagree about not buying a 1930 penny on ebay. I would certainly consider doing so (if I was in the market to buy one).

HOWEVER

I would be making very sure that I was getting what I was paying for before handing any money over (and probably before even placing a bid). At the very least I would be picking up, and having the item verified at pickup.

If potential buyers say "I wont bid on that because it is on ebay", then there will be less competition, and an item may end up selling at a low price.

Personally I would not even be bidding on anything ebay over $500 and the 1930 penny is not a place to buy or sell on ebay

Florida I disagree with the term "anything over $500" but I agree with the 1930 on ebay. Not the right place.

dibby33,
I have noticed other listings from the same seller and wondered about the prices they are asking for circulated coins.

I did inform the gentleman that perhaps his prices might be incorrect. His reply, "Thank you for your input".
When I then less subtly pointed him in the direction of him taking the piss, his reply, "Thank you for your input".
He knows what he is going. What a (*#$#@.

Is this reportable? Probably not.

People are allowed to list coins for any price they wish. The coins are worth what someone will pay for them. There will be more listing like this now of ebay due to the new fees structure. People can list coins for whatever they want now and it doesn't cost them anything (except for credibility!). Definitely not reportable as all of the information is supplied and he is not deceiving anybody.

From a quick look at feedback the seller is selling some items and getting good feedback.
If buyer and seller are happy then good luck to them.
Getting back on topic, how much does everyone think the 1930 penny will fetch?

I'll estimate $16,000. (I feel like I'm in the Melbourne Cup sweep)

Ozcoins you made some interesting comments about buying a 1930 Penny on ebay which got me thinking about whether there would be any circumstances that I would consider doing it (if I was in the market for one)

Lets assume that the listing had clear and detailed photos of a genuine 1930 Penny. Lets also assume that the seller was in the same city as me.
A coin dealer would never sell a 1930 Penny on ebay so it would have to be a private sale. I can't see that a private seller would let people inspect the coin so lets assume the photos are high quality enough that I bid on the coin and win it.

So now I have to go and pick up the coin but how am I going to pay for it? Am I going to walk around with $18,000 cash in my pocket? Do I hire a coin expert and a body guard to accompany me? Can I trust someone who is selling a 1930 Penny on ebay?

It is an interesting mental exersize but I am struggling with the logistics of it.

Well the seller is in my city but I didn't bother asking if I could view it, MobOfRoos have you seen the new pictures? He has around 7 pictures of the coin now.

After posing the question, I thought about my own answer a bit.

Given a fine (without faults) 1930 penny is listed at a dealer for $20000 and this one is described as "with faults" and is being sold on ebay, I would guess it should go for $15,000 - $17,000.
I suspect bidders will get excited and go to $17,000.

Genuine or not,the chinese fake slabs have me concerned if anything ebay is real, seller seems genuine but no guarantee its grade or authenticity.Downies sold it to seller or did they?.Downies watching this item
I would never buy a pre decimal over $500 unless its from a respected dealer, ebay is a lucky dip with 1930 pennies and be realistic,no one would be bidding $17k on a coin unseen from this auction site
