Another thing to watch out for from PayPal is this. I had an older ebay account that I originally lost the info for. Instead of going the the hassle of trying to get all the info (It was on a old email Acct I had not used and was closed) I started a new acct. The old acct only had a feedback of 28 with 100% pos. About a year later I found all the information I needed for the acct in my files and reactivated it. It was a ebay.com account and linked to my PayPaininthearse acct. I owed $0.23 Can Dollars on the acct so I payed it through my PayPaininthearse acct. At that time I had a few hundred dollars in US funds available in the acct. What I did not know is that PayPaininthearse does not convert currency for you when a payment is made. They tried to take the payment out of my Canadian Dollar funds available which was at $0.00...it was all in US funds. They then tried to take the $0.23 out of the credit card I had on file which I had closed 8 months earlier. They then proceeded to take the $0.23 from my registered bank account. Unfortunately for me...It was the day before Pay Day and I had emptied it out on a purchase earlier that day. So...with all that being said. My bank charged me a $40 NSF for the $0.23 PayPaininthearse transaction. Reopening the darn acct was costing me a fortune. I guess it is my dumb luck for thinking that PayPaininthearse would know that I had money available in my Account and Just remove it from my US funds available. Nope...that would be to darn easy. Lesson learned. Make sure you always have the correct currency available for any payments you make with PayPaininthearse. I sure do now. LOL!

I don't know what's up with people's experiences here. We have literally tens of thousands of transactions through PayPal and have never been charged to refund money (and been refunded fees on them) and every single transaction in a different currency is converted seamlessly and automatically. Every time. As a matter of fact I just sent money to Portugal today from my USD Paypal account.

It sucks but, what can we do? I sell on ebay but, it's limited. That's what happens when you have a monopoly company with no others that come close to competing.

I agree with Bobby. I have made many payments to other countries and currencies out of my US$ account and every time they made the currency exchange automatically.

I really wish there was a viable alternative to both E-Bay and Paypal. I cannot believe that nobody else has entered this vast online market. Sad

I am not sure that ebay is so much tremendous at what it does as it has tremendous momentum.

You can sell coins on esty.com. They don't have auctions though. I've never sold anything there and you still have to deal with Paypal. You might be restricted to selling only old coins on that site, though because their rules state that what is sold on their site must be original (like art) or vintage.

I have been considering doing away with Paypal. With all of the ebay fees and Paypal fees together, well its just too much. Plus my monthly bank statements are so long with dozens of ACH/Paypal transactions and its really cluttered. Gosh I wish Bidpay was still around! I may just go all cash or money orders. As for ebay, they're the top game around and really the only way to go. It would really be nice if there were some local coin shops around. Had one here in town not long ago but they just vanished. So ebay and online retailers are my best source for coins. It's really a bummer paying a chunk of change for shipping costs when that money could go towards coins.

I just got an e-mail from Paypal concerning the negative balance:
Recently, your PayPal account dipped to a negative balance of -$0.30 USD. This can happen sometimes if you've issued a refund, for example. Not to worry. We're covering the -$0.30 USD to bring your balance back up to zero. That way, your account remains in good standing. It's our way of saying, "Thanks for using PayPal."
Thanks,
PayPal

Yes they do, every time, automatically. Well...all I can say is that it was not that way for me. I had plenty of funds in my account in US funds. The payment they tried to take out from ebay.com was in Canadian funds and they did not automatically convert the funds over from my US dollar balance. It eventually went to my bank account to take the withdraw and the rest has been said already. I'm not saying that you are mistaken. I'm just saying that is what happened to me. I emailed PayPal after the incident to see if there is any way I could recover the lost money from the NSF and I never received a email reply. I counted it as lesson learned and made sure I exchanged the currency when I had to. Maybe I should of pursued it further. Ahh well. I got over it. :)
