Thanks muddler. I've had that Wisconsin in my Watch List and would enjoy having it. It suffers from some gouge/scratch problems on the reverse ... but appears to have honest circulation, original surfaces and return privilege.

BTW ... I did pick up the Delaware. Seller and I agreed on $195 as a fair price. Here are my photos ... I grade VF30 with honest surfaces.

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Now down to 14 holes in my Dansco.

Are you buying circulated coins when you stubble upon them or are you actively looking?

I have been very actively looking for over 2 years ... trolling e-bay, coin shows, dealer stock, etc.

I'm sure that Spanish Trail is going to be a challenge.

Agreed ... along with many others. The Elgin, Antietam, Hudson, Robinson and Spanish Trail are all going to be tough.

I may never finish this set ... but am having a blast chasing these historical coins in circulated condition.

I'm glad you were able to get the Delaware at a better price, it looked like a good fit for your album.

Thanks muddler. Truly appreciate you keeping an eye out for me ... and please know from me to you that your assistance is personally valued.

That Oregon Trail concerns me ... appears to not only be well cleaned but has a very unusual wear pattern ... I'm thinking it was intentionally worn down by some unknown mechanical means then buffed to death to hide the evidence.

Call me paranoid ... perhaps the discovery of my counterfeit California Half has heightened my awareness levels?

Good news is that I did pick up the circulated Wisconsin ... looking forward to it's arrival soon. I'll share some photos when it gets here.

Lastly ... wondering what the family thinks about the current Hudson on E-Pray ... the small and blurry photos have me undecided as to whether to pursue this rare coin or not ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1935-H...em45ff8f3cc2

All thoughts on the Hudson welcome and encouraged ... I'm thinking AU55 with reverse damage ... and as much as I would like to fill this hole am leaning towards no bid.

You folks are tremendous ... and your 'eyes' to help me find these coins are much appreciated. Many Thanks to all of you for your support.

Respectfully,

David

It's really rather difficult to judge given the listing graphics. I think I would request some higher quality photos from the seller. The bidding is low though and there IS a 14 day return policy. I would give it a go David. There does seem to be a goodly amount of mint luster on the reverse. I agree with you on the AU grade... PG

The seller has good feedback, I'm with PG, ask for better photos. As far as your circulated set goes I thought this one did not have enough wear to merit. I'm glad you got the Wisconsin, I thought the scratch added to it's authenticity as a true circulated specimen.

I agree with that view muddler ... and have decided to not pursue the Hudson. Many Thanks for your and PG valued input ... your insights have helped to talk me off the ledge of making what would likely be a long-term mistake.

This is the first and only circulated Hudson I have ever seen in two years of searching ... I suppose the rarity of this coin got the better of me for a bit ... but at AU55 with questionable surfaces I would soon be looking for a lower graded coin for my set ... and this is not an inexpensive coin purchase to chase.

The lowest graded PCGS Hudson is VF30 ... and there are two PCGS coins graded VF35 ... with a total PCGS population of 17 coins AU55 and lower. Not a common coin at all to find in any circulated grade ... hence my initial interest in this E-Pray example.

So I agree to sit back and wait ... looking for a nice XF or so example someday.

Changing gears to a new happy thought ...

I did receive the 1936 Wisconsin Half I grade VF30 or so ... lovely coin with honest original surfaces.

Weight is 12.38 grams ... and all details compare well to my PCGS MS66/CAC coin ... don't ask me why I might be concerned ... one word ... California.

My photo below ... the reverse scratches that were so obvious in the E-Pray photo are still there ... just muted by my poor photography skills.

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

I am very much enjoying the challenge of the hunt for this circulated set ... great coins with great history ... and supported by all of you in support of me.

Best

David

The Wisconsin looks like a perfect fit for your set, obviously circulated and with a cameo look too. You got me "watching" the Hudson just for kicks and giggles.

VF Cleavland on the bay, some dark spots but may be a candidate for your set.

That AU Hudson sold for $503.88 ... and thankfully not to me.

Still ... a fair deal IMHO ... assuming the reverse damage I was concerned about is just poor photography ... note that CDN Bid/Ask in AU is $600/$650.

The "Hudson Experience" has taught me that I need to apply a bit of science to my search ... so I will prowl through the PCGS Pop Reports and make some notes to self relative to known population of circulated classic commemorative ... granted the PCGS database is by no means encompassing ... but I have access and it should provide some insights.

I'll share any significant learning's with the family.

Thanks for the link to the Cleveland muddler ... I've thrown it to my Watch List and will take a better look soon. First impression is an honestly circulated coin with some problems.

Geepers ... that Gettysburg is a tough coin to find in well-circulated condition. First I've seen below AU55 in my 2+ years of hunting.

PCGS Population Report lists 5,080 PCGS certified Gettysburg .... and a total of five (5) in XF or lower.

This appears to be an honestly circulated, genuine example with original surfaces .... the noted rim damage is there but not terribly distracting given what the coin has experienced since being struck in 1937.

I suspect there will be some interest in this example ... and I am personally on it like white on rice.

Many Thanks again muddler for the heads up.

Wish me luck. I'd enjoy this one in the set.

Sooo ... I received today this latest addition to my circulated circulated silver set ... a Cleveland Half ... cost me $81 on E-Pray.

With the coin in hand I grade as a genuine XF40 or so example with honest original surfaces ... weight is 12.43 grams and compares exactly to my PCGS MS65/CAC coin.

Photo ...

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Great PUP for authenticity of this coin is the incuse designer initials BP ... Brenda Putman ... located on the obverse field at appx 5am under the bust of Moses Cleaveland ... tough to fake an incuse feature on any coin.

Sorry for the focus on counterfeit identification ... once burned is twice learned.

Interesting is the story of how Moses Cleaveland, then a brigadier general in the US Army ... founded a city in 1776 now known by it's modern name.

History claims that the editor of the first local newspaper .. the Cleveland Advertiser ... decided to drop the letter 'a' ... since it did not fit their format ... and supposedly that change has been accepted ever since!

Back to this coin ... I tried a quick acetone wash of the dark spots ... no joy on that attempt. The reverse rim hits at 7pm to 8pm are real ... but accepted by me in the sprirt of the coins I am chasing.

Enjoying this latest addition to my circulated set. I see fully original surfaces and honest circulation wear ... just what I am seeking.

Thanks to muddler for pointing me towards this coin.

Now down (again) to 14 holes in my circulated silver set.

Truly having a blast chasing these lovely and history filled coins in honest circulated condition.

David
