silver is currently hovering around $34.00/troy oz. My mentor says, you can stomp on your coins and they will never be less than melt. That said, I wonder if anyone has looked at the comparison curve of how numismatic values have risen verses the price of silver. I would say that before the Red Book is printed next year, some major revisions in prices need to take place. The Red Book is hopelessly out of date.

I have read that the numismatic values have not kept pace with the rise in PM prices. Especially in gold coins that once carried large premiums over spot. Look at it this way, a junk silver dime has almost doubled in price in a year but a BU Choice grade dime has not nearly gone up that much, if at all. Gem grades I really do not follow and can not attest to.

Yes I have seen this as well so I guess a good time to buy the numismatic value coins if that's what you really want. I have purchased proofs when silver prices where close to the actual silver spot. Coins with numismatic value that can be purchased at similar price to spot are a win win. If silver goes down the coins with numismatic value may hold more value than just junk.

Quote: So the trick is to not let them leave then eh? :P Ha ha... only problem is, by the time a kid is 18-19 years old, most of them are more than ready to get out their own. Oddly enough, the parents are usually more ready than the kids are for that time to arrive.

When silver is high I work on my BU Franklin set or PRE 1950 BU Washingtons and when silver is low I work on my XF+ Walkers, Barbers, or any other circulated classics that are eye appealing and just above 'junk'(since I may never afford higher graded sets of some of the classics anyway.

As to "Are you buying?"... My next buy is likely to be some BU silver dimes and some proof quarters. APMEX has a reasonable deal on their $100 bags of BU dimes and an even better deal on their proof Statehood Quarters. 10 rolls of these quarters would be good. I have quite a few US silver dollars, ASEs, Maples, and 5-oz. silver bars, so the small unit 90% silver coins look like a good fit with what I already have. I can probably get 90% US silver coins a little cheaper locally but they are always circulated coins that do not look nearly as nice as the AUs, BUs, and proof coins. Part of my collecting experience is to get my coins out from time to time and look them over. Coins that do not look good don't do much for me but coins in fine or better condition do.

Looks like Silver may be in the midst of a nose dive right now (so far today it has dropped $1.11 to $32.72).
If it keeps sliding and hits $30, I think I'll try to pick up some bullion-grade ASEs. I currently have 8 and need 12 more to complete a roll. I don't think it will actually go that low, but I'm going to keep an eye on it just in case...

Yes I just noticed that as well and wonder why. Seems not much of a rhyme or reason for fluctuation. Me too on the under $30! When silver has been high I thought the proof sets were not a bad deal since near what junk costs me. Now not so! Junk is best at lower spot prices

I have actually been selling a lot of my gold and silver (Alot meaning 2 ounces of gold and 1 of my 3 ATB 2010 5oz bullion sets). The Only real reason for this is because I am trying to get into the real estate market. My Parents own a couple homes that the rent out and are getting ready to retire. My mother called me last night and said once they retire on a couple years they will have all properties paid off and be earning and extra $36,000 a year just off rent. IMO I feel this is a good route to go at the time. I figure bullion will almost for sure be a lot higher than it is now, but I don;t think it will give me the return real estate could. Just my reasoning for selling some of my more expensive stuff.

Quote: Down $2.42 to $31.40. Only another $1.40 to go... You will probably get it. With a sharp break like this, we are probably in another short downtrend, possibly, but not likely, all the way to $26.
