I can't be sure from the epics if it's re-plated or not. What I wonder is why would anyone go through the trouble of re-plating a steel cant? He obviously didn't make a lot of money of the auction. (except from the shipping) and that's not enough to warrant re-plating.
I bought some very nice 43 Wheaties at a gun show last spring. A Dad and son had a table with some coins and military stuff so I doubt they were scam artists. I paid $1 each for the coins and didn't have to pay the shipping.
Personally I think the coins are authentic but the seller was trying to make money on the shipping. I've dealt with ebay enough to know that's how some sellers make their money

Just wanted to follow up on this coin. It arrived today and I'm sure it is replated. The edge is as nice and shiny as the faces of the coin, no steel core to be seen. In the end it only cost me 99 cents to learn my lesson.

I bought a T1 1913 Buffalo nickel at the same time from this guy and he only charged me the shipping cost for one coin so I just consider that cost to go to the Buffalo. The Buffalo is pretty nice, probably EF or AU, though it might have been cleaned, but I'm not certain. I've always found Buffalos to be tough coins to grade and tell if it was cleaned compared to other coins. Anyway, it is a nice coin, and if it is cleaned it isn't harsh, so I'll just enjoy it in my 7070!

As for the steel cent, I'll put it in a 2x2 and keep it as a reminder to always do my homework before buying a coin that might be tampered with. I think what really got me on that cent is that it is a pretty high grade. Had it been VF instead of AU it probably would have raised red flags. While I won't rule out buying from him again I will be much more cautious about his coins next time.

Anyway, thanks again for the enlightening discussion!
