Hello -

i was roll searching today and came across a 1968s LMC. the luster is fantastic on it! however, I have no idea how to tell if this is a MS or a PF? I can't do pictures - I'm at work

the closest looking coin I could find is if in go into the coin facts and click on the 1959 - present LMC link - the luster and appearence of the coin at the very top (1967) is almost exact to the one I found.

Without photos it is difficult to tell anything about a coin. Even with photos, some are to close to just guess.
Problem with that one is even if it was a proof, after being in circulation, the surface surely must be messed up. And too, that dated proof is not to valuable.

I don't really see a good mirror-like reflection on that one.
I'm going to guess that it's a Regular Strike, but let's see what the others say.

Not a Proof, but a very nice looking circulation strike!

definitely not a proof. The 68-S proofs, whilst lacking the precise detail of some more modern examples were always very "brilliant". Even if the there was a proof circulating for a while it wouldn't look like that.

68-S was hoarded at the time of issue, then once people realized it had no real premium, dumped into circulation at much later dates. You can frequently find this date in AU condition.

So what is the best way to tell if a coin is proof or not? Just solely on the luster and details? Or is it a little more complicated than that?

The difference between a proof and mint state 1968S cent is night and day. Very obvious which is which.
