I've finally bit the bullet and started bidding on coins on ebay. I think I may have been a little sloppy though and may have bought a coin I shouldn't have. I wanted a nicer looking 1943 steel cent for my Dansco 7070 than the well circulated one I already own. I saw a listing with a nice shiny '43 and bid on it. Between when I bid and when I won I did a little more research and found out that replating those cents is pretty common. I should have known better but I didn't think anyone would make the effort to tamper with such a low value coin. Anyway, could you look at the link and give me your opinion? Worst case I'm only out a couple bucks, so not a huge deal (more me feeling stupid about making a rookie mistake than anything). In fact I contacted the seller and basically asked him to determine if it is replated and if it is if he could cancel the sale rather than sending it to me and I returning it. I'm waiting to hear back. Opinions welcome! http://www.ebay.com/itm/36039537084....m1434.l2649

If you can't tell by looking at the surface when you get it, look at the edge. When they replate, the edge is plated also, whereas the unplated cent has a visible steel core.

Definitely looks replated to me based on the picture. Wait till you get it in hand though. But also at that price i'd say it's most likely replated. I had a hard time telling as well, so before I bought one on ebay I posted it here on this forum to see what others had to say.

It definitely looks plated. You will be able to tell very easily once it gets to you just by searching for a cartwheel and finding a giant glare while looking at the surface. I hate to be one to start gossip, but I believe that seller is currently under investigation. I had purchased something from him (my transaction was fine and coins were all good) but ebay contacted me and asked me questions about him, fraud, his service, his shipping, etc. I just told em my transaction went fine, I don't know the guy personally.

Thanks for the opinions. If I was looking to buy a high value coin I would have done better with my homework, but it never occurred to me that people would mess with a coin that is only worth a few bucks in MS. If he is willing to cancel the transaction that would be for the best. If not I'll probably just keep the coin since it would cost me more than a dollar to send it back, but he'll probably get at least a neutral review if he refuses.

That's why my first p,d,s set of steel cents turned out to be plated. I didn't do my homework because I thought that no one would fake or replate those bad boys. It is really common these days though.

He retouch the pictures to make it look better. I have bought from that seller once and coin was clean with hairline scratches.

These sellers wouldn't know a real "scare better date" if one hit them upside the head.

You are now the not so proud owner of a replated 1943 cent.

At least your not out too much money. I wouldn't mind getting a BU PDS set of these at some point but I'd have to check here first to see it they are the real deal.

It looks replated to me. The fields should be smooth which they are not. And like desertgem said, "look at the edge. When they replate, the edge is plated also, whereas the unplated cent has a visible steel core."

I too think possibly replated but from the photos, just not 100% sure. Wish Coppercoins would jump in on this one. That set shown on that same aution for $3.50 for all three looks much better and for that price, even if plated wouldn't be to bad a purchase. It is really getting difficult to find those in decent shape, coated or not. Remember once worn, plating will only make it look shinny but will not bring back details like the lines in the Wheats on the reverse. I'm presently up to 2,543 of those Steel Cents. Lots of all kind of plated ones too. So far only 3 of the Copper ones. Almost a roll of the Chromed ones. They are a fun type of coin.

Thanks again for the comments. If I can't get the auction cancelled I'll hang onto the coin as a good lesson both for me and for anyone new to coin collecting that I come across. Had I done this on fake a 1916 D Merc I'd probably have a fit, but the amount I'm out here is chump change so I won't get too stressed.

Put them in an Album and no one would ever know. If you try to sell them in about 100 years, by then no one would care either.
