This 1858 large cent has what looks to be a die clash on both sides. On the obverse side it is through the last A in GRATIA and directly opposite it goes to the center stem of leaf #14 on the reverse side.

Is this common or a type of variety...Thanks

Excellent pictures, the reverse die crack is Zoell L1s and the obverse die crack is L1h , although your pictures seem to indicate these are later in the life of the dies and therefore larger.

Thanks ilikeikes, but I'm just learning like most, reading books and learning from others. And I sure wish someone (Charlton Press ?) could get the rights to reprint Hans Zoell's books on errors and varieties.

west- canuk....Appreciate your help & knowledge, thanks very much.. The first two pictures were taken in the wrong and poor light conditions, here's pictures that reflect the true color of the coin and show the die cracks better. Thanks again..

In my first book, I catalogued this die marriage as OD3/RB13. My random sampling showed that this die marriage coined about 3% of the 1858 mintage, which puts it in the middle of the pack as far as scarcity for an 1858 die marriage.

I'm glad bosox posted here. I just recently found his new? website and highly recommend it to all who are interested in Victorian large cents..tons of great information. Also, if you want to go to Rob's site and see his most excellent coin collection, I also suggest it. It will make you drool all over your keyboard! ;)
