echizento- Awesome! I'm glad that I've stumbled upon something great. I'd love to see some pics of your coins once they have completed their adventures submerged in peroxide.

Here are the coins that I had soaking in hydrogen peroxide for the past few days. They were pretty crusty, as you can see the hydrogen peroxide worked well.   |

echizento- Those are lookin' great! That is awesome. I'm glad that I stumbled upon this method. I actually ordered some more uncleaned late Romans recently, so they too will get the same treatment.

Could you do before and after pics Archraz?
This has been an interesting thread - I have a couple of coins that aren't fully cleaned and thinking of buying a few more to give this a go.

bobbyhelmet- Will do! I only ordered a few uncleaned late Romans found in France, but I also ordered 2 uncleaned larger, earlier coppers. These should be from 50-200CE. So these may prove even more interesting. I just hope that they are not too encrusted with verdigris or anything else which peroxide may not be able to combat.

Cool - I've just bought the Hydrogen Peroxide, now all I need is a few nice crustys. Will take pics too.

OK, I am proud to show off a final product. After one week in hydrogen peroxide this coin went from a crusty, flattened rock-like disk to this:   So I paid $4 for this as an uncleaned ancient. Did I get a good deal? (or at least a coin worth about $4 or $5?) |

Well, you have a coin worth about what you paid IMHO. But the difference is that you have had the opportunity to be a part of bringing it back from the dead. One thing I would do is shine it up a bit with some wax or even WD40 to give it a little more of a shine. It's a nice coin.

jwharper- Thanks for the input! The scans do not do it justice at all. The reverse is much clearer and does not appear to have any remaining dirt when in hand. The Obverse looks MUCH better when in hand. The lettering is quite clear and readable. Despite the pitting at the base of the bust, the surface overall has some eye appeal.

Its good you like your coin. When I clean coins and they turn out nice as yours did, I feel a little like Dr. Frankenstein, or is that Frankensteen for you Mel Brooks fans. With all the talk about cleaning coins, I suppose I need to get back to mine that have been soaking for a long time now. Nearly a year in total. I'll let you all know how they turn out.
Again, your coin turned out very nice.

jwharper- Thanks! I totally agree that there is a certain pride in restoring the coin. I hope that yours turn out well when you check on them in the near future!
I'm still waiting for my new uncleaned coins to arrive, but once they do, I'll post some before pics.

Ok - I have my 'contenders', or at least I will have soon, mail permitting:  Constantine London Sol - has been cleaned (badly) already by myself. I also waxed it so it will be interesting what if any improvements can be made to this.  Constantine Siscia Sol - Not a bad coin but the details aren't great. Been looking for one of these for a while but not been prepared to pay the silly prices some have been asking. Believe it or not even in this condition it cost $12.  Constantine unknown mint Sol - Details visible but should be a good challenge. I'm hoping its another Siscia Sol as thats where most of the sellers coins came from but style wise I have my doubts. |
