Ive been told that this coin is Extremely rare, can anyone shed any light upon it  Its galloping right & I am Paul Askew Edited by coldashby

Is the horse galloping right or left? I cant seem to tell, I would guess left.

If its right it is quite rare, if its left less so.

That is a:Carausius, AE antoninianus, Uncertain British mint. IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVG, Emperor on horseback galloping right, holding spear. (Overstruck on an earlier flan with some of the previous legend visible on the reverse.) It is rated R2
But something is funny here. If this is your coin or one in which you are currently considering buying, it happens to be the exact same coin listed on Wildwinds as being owned by Paul Askew. Same flan, breaks, etc. Hmmmmmm, interesting

Good detective work Lieutenant Harper  The problem with rarity and Carausius coins is that they have quite a barbarous nature and thus the cross-over between official and unofficial is very blurry. We dont know much about how his mints were ran or even where all his mints were. Its common to find un-common Carausius coins if that makes any sense. This is however the only known galloping right coin as opposed to a number of 'riding left' versions so that would help its desirability. RIC V-2, uncertain British mint 1036. Edited by bobbyhelmet

Thats because I am Paul Askew & it my coin, I thought at first it was just a pax as I had been looking at it the wrong way up,
British museum are after it, Sam Moorehead from there emailed me & I am waiting his response, I psted it here just trying to get more info

Hello Paul - I would guess to a Carausius collector (there are quite a few) this would be very desirable. Finding those buyers and realising the true value would be the hard part.

I have just returned to find your images of this very interesting coin.
It appears to be:
Copper alloy radiate of Carausius, AD 286-93
Unmarked issue
Obv. IMP ACR[ ]...; Radiate, draped and cuirassed right
Rev. (VI?)[RTVS AVG?]; Emperor galloping right, holding spear
Mintmark: -//-
Note: The Coin has been double-struck rendering the legends illegible in places.
RIC V, pt 2, p. 544, cf. 1036
This is a very rare coin.

Wow, this is quite a rare coin, rated R2 in RIC. Here is how it will be listed in the text file on wildwinds in a few minutes :-) (I got rid of the background so it looks very smart on the white background.)
Carausius, AE antoninianus, Uncertain British mint.

VIRTVS AVG, Emperor on horseback galloping right, holding spear.
RIC V-2, 1036.
Rare (rated R2)
Overstruck on an earlier flan with some of the previous legend
visible on the reverse.
(then "Contributed by..." you!)
The overstrike shows us how Carausius needed to use old flans to make new coins, poor sod. This may have been struck at the time when the "other" emperors (LOL) were up near Calais preparing for an invasion to get rid of Carausius thus blocking any imports of metal from the continent.

Well, Paul, sorry for my detective work, but its in my nature. On to your coin. If the museum is after it, then there must be something unique about it. That is where I am stumped. I know little about the Carusius coins struck in Britain, so perhaps others who are more expert in this area will chime in. BTW, I had a feeling it was you and your coin when first I saw it. It was only posted to Wildwinds in March of this year (I think). Its a nice coin. Edited by staff to remove buy/sell reference. OP is not eligible to buy/sell/trade per the rules. ? Regards, JW |

Do you know any collectors? I would like it to goto the Museum & they dont have one so are interested, but I have no idea how much its worth.

I don't know Dane personally, but she enjoys a superb reputation in the community. If she says its rare, you can take it to the bank (literally in this case if the museum wants it).

Thanks for the extra info, nice find - It might be a good idea to edit out your email address, the mods (for good reasons) dont like them posted in threads. This is a good example of something we have been discussing in another thread this evening - namely RIC rarities: https://goccf.com/t/99558Both coins are rated R2, but your coin is from a single known 'issue' ie there are not any other known galloping right variants. Subsequently the BM are interested in it. The coin in the other thread is also an R2, however there are 616 known variants of this coin so its desirability and value is hugely reduced. Hope you get a good price for it - keep us posted and  to the forum. Do you intend to find super rare coins on a regular basis?  |
